A memorial service for Dr. Todd Crawford will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at 2pm at St. John's United Methodist Church 104 Newberry St. NW, Aiken. Dr. Crawford, 75, of New Ellenton, died Saturday at University Hospital in Augusta, GA. He was born in Los Angeles, CA to Roland H. Crawford and Sarah Crooks Crawford on August 9, 1931. Dr. Crawford graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from California Polytechnic State College 1953, an M.S. 1958 and a Ph.D. in Meteorology 1965 from the University of California at Los Angeles. The early part of his career included four years as a meteorologist/officer in the US Air Force, continuing in the Air Force Reserves for several years. He also spent seven years as an agricultural meteorologist on the faculty of the University of California at Davis, and seven years as a scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory of the University of California. A native Californian he moved to South Carolina with his wife and three small children in the summer of 1972 to develop environmental research programs at the Savannah River Laboratory. He retired as an Environmental Fellow from the Westinghouse Savannah River Site in September 1993. Since retirement, he consulted on environmental and SRS issues and was a part-time farmer. He was active with the Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness CNTA, the Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board, the Savannah River Site Health Effects Committee of the Center for Disease Control, and co-founded the SRS Heritage Foundation. He was also chairman of the Ruth Patrick Science Center Advisory Committee at USCA. Todd loved horses and had them throughout his life starting as a pre-teen. He enjoyed participating in horse shows and riding with his grandchildren. He enjoyed outdoor activities with his family and friends including snow skiing, backpacking, and swimming in the ocean. Todd is survived by his wife Beatrice Bea Crawford and his children: Jill Crawford Ross, son in-law Doug Ross and grandchildren Christian and Grant Ross of Darnestown, MD; Craig Alan Crawford, daughter in-law Carol Crawford and grandchild Cole Crawford of Columbia, SC; Bret Edward Crawford, daughter in-law Sharon Stephenson and grandchildren Hugh and Anna Crawford of Gettysburg, PA.
