Aiken, SC-Funeral services for Mildred Elizabeth Van Vliet, will be held Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 2pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken, SC, with Rev. Dr. Rodney K. Powell officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1pm until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Aiken County SPCA, 411 Wire Rd. Aiken, SC 29801.
Mrs. Van Vliet, 88, of Aiken, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Home, Aiken.
Born in Columbus, MS, she was one of four children of the late Irby Leech and Norma Jean Jones Leech, she had been a resident of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, for thirty-five years, where she was a member of Mary Ester United Methodist Church, prior to coming to Aiken, SC, in October 2003, where she attended Trinity United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of sixty-one years, Raymond V. Van Vliet, Sr., a brother, Irby Leech, Jr and a sister, Elsie Burks. She is survived by a daughter Sharon and her husband, Robert Whitaker, Aiken, SC; sons, Raymond V., Jr., and his wife Jackie Van Vliet, Kannapolis, NC and Steven Alan and his wife, Nikki Van Vliet, Alamogordo, NM; and a sister, Nina Brown, Meridian, MS. She is also survived by six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
