Obituary of Lynne E. Martin
Please share a memory of Lynne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lynne E. Martin, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at her home in Aiken, S.C. after a long illness.
The daughter of the late T. Richard and Ethel Fookes Martin was born June 27, 1941, in New Rochelle, N.Y. She was a 1959 graduate of Pelham Memorial High School. In 1963 she graduated from Marietta College in Ohio with a Bachelor's degree in Speech. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Lynne also attended Penn State where she earned her Masters in Theatre Arts, graduating in 1966. Her first job was with Voice of America in Washington D.C.
In the early eighties, Lynne moved from Alexandria, Va. to Aiken, S.C. to be closer to family. Her jobs included Senior Supervisor with Kelly Temporary Services, Curriculum Developer at Aiken Technical College, and for the past five years she was a teacher at Aiken High School where she taught English 3, Drama, and Speech. She was honored to be the recipient of the Golden Apple Award in the Fall of 2005, and attended the ceremony in Augusta this Spring to receive her award.
Because the "theater" had always been close to her heart, she was instrumental to getting Aiken High School involved in the Garcia Theater Project sponsored by USCA. In 2005 she directed the play "Girltown" which won 1st place for Best Performance. This year's play, "Mark Twain in the Garden of Eden" received 2nd place for Best Production. She was very proud of her students.
We will remember Lynne for her dedication, creativity, unique sense of humor, and her great strength and courage throughout this past year. She will be sadly missed by her family, her pets, Tillie and Percy, and all who knew her.
Survivors include her brother, Thomas R. Martin and his wife Marcia, Green Bay, Wi, three nieces, Catherine Dan Ghoca, Madison, Wi, Laurie Erik Thompson, Mequon, Wi., and Holly Martin, Chicago, Il. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elizabeth "Betsy" Kirk, and her niece, Heather Martin.
The family would like to thank the teachers at Aiken High, Regency Hospice, Southern Home Care Services, her "drivers," and The Cancer Care Institute for the love and support given to Lynne.
