Obituary of Charles Hickman Hewitt

A memorial service for Dr. Charles Hickman Hewitt, Jr., MD will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 26 at 6:30 pm at Hopeland Gardens. A reception at Rye Patch will follow. Dr. Hewitt, 55, of Aiken, died Thursday August 14, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Aberdeen, MD and had lived in Lexington, KY, Temple, TX, Long Branch, NJ, and before moving to Aiken in 1979. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and his MS degree in radiation biology from the University of New Mexico. He was co-founder of the Family Medcenters in Aiken, and was widely known for his advocacy and care for abused children. Following his retirement from medical practice he became a volunteer advocate for disabled people and was a co-founder of the Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church. It has been said that he was born to be a physician.
Dr. Hewitt is survived by his wife, Naomi J. Frost-Hewitt, Aiken; a daughter, Cherie Hewitt-Offenbecker, son-in-law Galen Offenbecker of Aiken; one granddaughter; Jessica Naomi Hewitt; two brothers. James P. Hewitt, Tampa, FL and William D. Hewitt, Gettysburg, PA and one sister, Susan Bottenfield Woods of Warrington, PA, and his mother, Irene C. Hewitt also of Warrington, PA.
