"The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares." ... Henri Nouwen
Jim was a friend I seldom deserved, but always cherished. I would not have made it through the rudderlessness of the death of my husband, his friend, without Jim.

Mr. Verenes was instrumental in the adoption of our son, Palmer. He spent almost 2 hours on a Saturday counseling us on adoption and answering all of our questions. He refused to let us pay him for his time. He said his only charge was he wanted a picture of our child when our journey was complete. He also said he was only a phone call away if we needed anything.
8 months later when we were matched through an agency in Charleston, we knew who our lawyer would be. Mr. Verenes was excited for us, and took care of every detail from that point forward.
We would see him occasionally downtown, and he always smiled and asked about our family. He was a very special man, and will be greatly missed in the Aiken community.

I loved Jimmy; a great friend and attorney who helped me out on several occasions; a wonderful gentleman. He had a great laugh and wonderful spirit. Whenever I was home in Aiken, I looked for him at the Stoplight Deli. The last time I saw him was our 40th Class of '68 Reunion; although so ill, his presence was indomitable. He probably never complained. My sincerest sympathy to his family.

Jim was such a good person with a kind spirit. I had not run into him in such a long time, but when I did it was at stoplight deli. He was cheery even though I'm sure it was difficult to get around. My mom, Gladys, always remarked about how good it was to see him at the courthouse when she worked there. I know Aiken will miss him. My prayers are with his family.

J.V. was a kind man and was always pleasant to work with in court. Years ago we both were getting into backyard bird watching and we would talk about the visitors to our feeders. One day he came to court and surprised me with a book about birds. He was thoughtful like that and left an imprint on the lives he touched.

Jimmy was one of the finest men I've ever known. Though my former husband, John, held Jimmy in the highest esteem, I did not know him well until I started having lunch on Monday's at the Stoplight Deli. Jimmy came in almost every Monday, He was cheerful and upbeat each time I saw him and was an interesting conversationalist. I admired his positive attitude, particularly. He will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. My deepest sympathies are with his family.

I know you are smiling again, with that grin you always had. I first meet Jim when I was in the second grade at his law office. I was practicing my handwriting in the conference room. I was the flower girl when he married Susan. He attended my wedding in 96 and was the officiant for my sister's wedding later that year. He kept tabs on me and my MS through my mom. I will never forget talking to you in the middle of a store. We were in the way and we did not care. You were leaning on your cane and I was in my chair. We got looks, but no one dared say anything to the two laughing "crips" blocking everything . You made me laugh at myself that day. I was having a bad day and then I ran into you, literally. I promise I am a better driver when I use my chair these days. You reminded me that day that I would never be given more than what I could deal with and that I had to laugh. No matter what, just laugh for a minute. Life is better if you just stop and laugh for a minute. We lost a great man today. Although I know you are in a better place, you will be greatly missed. You touched a lot of lives just by your quiet example of strength and courage. You were brave, kind, funny, and never gave up. Nothing stopped you. I will miss you. ToniMarie Poncebaker
