Aiken, SC-Martin Herbert Zwerling, 76, MD, FACS died Friday, May 10, 2002. Martin was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 19, 1925. He was the son of the late Dr. Samuel and Hedwig Zwerling. He was a graduate of Columbia College where he received his BA degree. He attended and graduated from Medical School at Columbia University at the age of 20. He completed his residency in Otorhinolaryngology and Fellowships in Head and Neck surgery at Downstate Medical Center in N. Y. C. Following his medical training he was commissioned in the United States Navy where he was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant. He was the former co-founder and publisher of seven weekly newspapers on Long Island, active member of the Republican Party, an accomplished musician and writer. He founded the Suffolk County Hearing and Speech Center. Martin had been published in numerous medical journals and served as guest editor recently for the South Carolina Medical Society. He was a member of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners Disciplinary Committee. He was active in the South Carolina Medical Association?s Physicians Assistance and Advocacy Committee and the CSRA Caduceus Club, which he co-founded with Dr. Earl Loomis in the early 1980?s. The CSRA Caduceus Club helped hundreds of recovering physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and other health professionals. Dr. Zwerling was a founding member of the planning committee for the Annual Alcohol and Drug Issues Conference and worked tirelessly on the conferences for the past nine years. He was actively planning the December, 2002 conference in the weeks prior to his death. He planned, edited and wrote two issues of the South Carolina Medical Journal, which were devoted to addiction in health professionals. In his capacity as a physician he often lectured and served as chief of numerous hospitals in Long Island, New York and Aiken, and was judge for the Board of Medical Examiners of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his former wife the late Nancy Solomon Zwerling. He is survived by his children, son Charles S. Zwerling, MD and his wife Melissa, of Goldsboro, NC; daughters, Marcy Z. Almy and her husband John, of Fairfax Station, VA, and Stacey Z. Foulsham and her husband, Charles, MD, of Lock Haven, PA; and grandchildren, Jennifer Almy, MD, Denison Almy, Cornyn Almy, Courtney Foulsham, Whitney Foulsham, Jeffrey Foulsham, Tiffany Zwerling and Alexis Zwerling. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 1 PM in the Historic Downtown Chapel of George Funeral Homes, Inc., 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park, Goldsboro, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Adash Yeshurun Synagogue, P.O.
