A Requiem Mass for Mr. Eugene H. "Gene" Kolkman will be celebrated by Fr. Gregory Wilson on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10am at St. Mary Help of Christians Church, Aiken. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, 211 Park Ave, SW Aiken is assisting the Kolkman family.
Mr. Kolkman, 75, of Aiken, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers after a brief illness.
A son of the late Albert F. Kolkman and Stella Marie Perriguey Kolkman, he was born in Ft. Wayne, IN and had lived in Perrysburg, OH before moving to Aiken fifteen years ago.
Gene's career of a full time union representative began on November 3, 1960â?¨with the Retail Clerks International Union, which later became the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union UFCW. He was dedicated to representing the working men and women of the UFCW for 36 years, retiring October 1, 1996. During that time he held eight different positions within the union in five different cities Ft. Wayne, Chicago, Omaha, Cincinnati and Toledo. Of all the positions he held, he was most proud of the twenty years spent as President of UFCW Local 954 and Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW Local 911.
Gene was an avid golfer at Cedar Creek Golf Club and was a loyal fan of Notre Dame Football, Indiana Basketball and Chicago Cubs Baseball.
Gene is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Judy Fenstermaker Kolkman, Aiken; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Scott Braynard, Johns Creek, GA; a son, Christopher Eugene Jessica Kolkman, Cincinnati, OH; two brothers, Jerry Margie Kolkman, Albion, IN and Ronnie Sandy Kolkman, Ft. Wayne, IN and a sister, Judy Ann Kolkman, New Haven, IN. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Steven, Sara ` and David Braynard and Luis Kolkman.
