A Requiem Mass for Richard "Dick" Shank will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 203 Park Ave., SE, Aiken, SC. Burial will be private. A prayer vigil will be held at 6:30 P.M. Tuesday at GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, visitation will follow until 9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Saint Mary Help of Christians "Building Fund" in memory of Richard C. Shank. Mr. Shank, age 79 passed away on April 22, 2016. Dick was born in West Newton, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Robert and Helen Gunchuck Shank. After graduating from West Newton High school he attended The University of Pittsburgh where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. As an early pioneer in the nuclear industry, Dick's career spanned 40 years with the Westinghouse company in various roles starting at the Bettis Atomic Power Plant in West Mifflin, PA, moving to the Nuclear Fuel Division in Monroeville, PA and finishing at The Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina where he lived for the past 27 years. Dick will be remembered as a loving, caring and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was extremely devoted to his Catholic faith and next to his family; this was the primary focus in his life. He was truly a selfless person who always put the interests of others ahead of his own. He had an undeniable gift to make anyone feel good when he talked to them through his subtle dry sense of humor and his simple and humble way. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lois Grandinetti Shank. His daughter Lori White, her husband Norman White and their children Jacob, Evan and Madeline of Waxhaw, North Carolina. Daughter, Susanne Gordon, her husband Robert Gordon and their children, Mary Claire, Grace and Rachel of Alexandria, Virginia. Son, Richard Shank, his wife Jennifer Shank and their children Colin, Matthew and Allie of Roswell, Georgia. His brothers Raymond Shank of Houston, Texas and Dennis Shank of West Newton, Pennsylvania.
