I was fortunate to work a good while at Bettis with Dick early in our careers. He was a mentor, a leader, and a genuine friend. Lots of down home common sense and perceptive problem solving and willingness to share the hard work. He was quite a guy. Anyone considered themselves lucky to be working for Dick.
Condolences to Lois and the kids.

Prayer was asked for the family in the Church of God bulletin Sunday and several of
us wondered, is it the Dick Shank we went to school with. Roberta Gunchuck, his
God Child notified me from Florida that indeed it was and to look on George's web site
West Newton High School building had 9th through 12 th in the same building so we
knew many upperclassmen as it was a small school. My name is Sandra Robinson
Kuch age 76, and Dick looks just the same only with grey hair. He was very active in
sports and the way he is described is exactly how he was in school., just an all around
great guy. Please accept condolences from West Newton where he grew up.

I did not meet Dick until moving from Pa. Little did my husband and i know that we three, had been students and graduated from our little high school," West Newton High". Through the years living here we became friends, my husband and Dick were part of the Monday Lunch Bunch after retirement. Since wives were never invited, who knows what all they talked about-----it was special. Dick, you will be missed so much by your family, buy also by your dear and loving friends. You and Stew, may have lunch together now in heaven. Cathy M.

Our deepest sympathy to Dick Shank's entire family. I first met Dick when he joined the nuclear design group I was in, shortly after coming to Pittsburgh from Maine, and starting my career at Bettis Laboratory. Working with Dick on an innovative reactor core design in the early 1960s was challenging and his guidance was a major factor in getting my career started on the right path. I really appreciated his support and advice in the nuclear power plant field. Dick introduced me to giant fish sandwiches at a bar and grill near South Park that we engineers frequented many Fridays for lunch. He married a Duquesne, PA gal and so did I. Lois, Marian and I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dick was a great role model for me as we grew up in Mustard Hollow. From him, I learned the importance of a high school education and participating in athletics. Since he was the first Shank cousin to go to college, he showed me that one can work to earn the money needed to complete a college degree and how that degree can open the doors to a rewarding professional career. During the past six or so years, I enjoyed the several times we were able to meet and recall the many fond memories we had about friends, relatives, and families. I will always be grateful for the guidance he provided me. Sandy and I offer our deepest sympathy to Lois, their children and grandchildren, as well as Timmo and Denny.

We are sending all our deepest sympathies to the entire Shank family for the recent death of their courageous and and loving Richard. We are saddened at the fact that he is no longer in this world but overjoyed that he is in heaven where he can see his Lord and master face to face. I know he was a religious man and told me he tried to pray the rosary every day. That was a good inspiration for my husband and I. He was such and sweet and loving family man and a pleasure to have as a friend. We will miss him so much. Ken regrets that he didn't have the opportunitie to make homemade sausage together, as they had planned.
Even though it is hard, life must go on for all of us, but it won't be easy, especially for dear Lois. We must remember that the Lord's timing is not our timing, and He can turn Dicks death into something good and wonderfull eventually. Please know we are here for you Lois and would be happy in any way to help. You have been the best wife ever to Richard and we want you to know we really love you.
With sincerity, tears, and best regards,
Sally and Ken Bryan
