George J. Hoffman, Jr., 86, died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease February 13, 2008. He was born in Elyria, OH, to the late George and Martha Auxer-Moss Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lucille B. Baron Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman, a recent resident of Aiken, relocated to South Carolina from St. Petersburg, FL., where he had resided since his retirement in 1981. George, a plant manager for Joy Global, retired after 40 years of service in Claremont, NH, Franklin, PA, Indiana, PA, Mt. Vernon, IL, and Grand Junction, CO. He was a member of the Elks, the VFW, the American Legion and the Panama Canal Society. A WWII Veteran, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific with the SeaBee's on Guam. Survivors are his daughter Barbara J. Deal of Richmond, VA., two son's, G. James Hoffman of Bow, NH, and William P. Hoffman of Aiken, SC; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Schmittgen of Elyria, OH; Marion Hammett of Deland, FL and Arlene Reider of Scotch Plains, NJ, as well as a brother, Edward Hoffman of Oxnard, CA. Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his sister Maxine Cawl, and brother, Donald Hoffman. A hunter in New Hampshire, a golfer in Colorado, and always partial to the Latin rhythms of the rumba and the samba, George Hoffman had a zest for life throughout his years. The family will receive friends from 3-5pm on Monday, February 18, 2008 at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave, SW, Aiken.
