D. William "Bill" Coppock, 66, a resident of Aiken, SC, died Tuesday, November 22nd at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his former home, on December 2, 2005. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 28th at 4:00pm at George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken.
Surviving besides his wife Barbara, are two sons, David E. Sunshine Coppock and Peter B. Coppock, both of Scottsdale, Arizona; step daughter, Anne Bill Stamats and their children, Haley and Ben, of Cedar Rapids and step son, George Joanne Purdie of Seattle, Washington; two sisters, Suzanne David Mason of Dunn, North Carolina and Betsy Greg Sanger of Chico, California, and several nieces and nephews.
He was born on June 26, 1939 in Salt Lake City, UT, to David and Betty Pitchforth Coppock who preceded him in death. He married Julie Cobb in 1964. They were later divorced. He then married Barbara Purdie on June 26, 1992 in Cedar Rapids.
Bill formerly worked for the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI, and the Quaker Oats Company both in Harrisburg, PA and in Cedar Rapids. He then became a senior vice president of Merchants National Bank, vice president of Brenton Bank and was the president and co-owner of the Best Buy Floral Supply Company in Cedar Rapids.
As a 30 year member of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Bill was a past president and treasurer of the board of directors and served as chairman and clerk of the board of trustees. Bill was instrumental to the success of the Art Museum's building campaign launched in 1985. He served as chairman, helping to raise ten million dollars for the construction and renovation of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art as we see it today. Following his retirement from the museum board, he was designated as an honorary lifetime trustee. Bill also served as president of the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, and was on the board of directors of the; Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Rotary Club, Mt. Mercy College, St. Luke's Hospital and the Cedar Rapids Country Club. He was also very involved in fundraising for the Fellowship Club in Cedar Rapids.
A graduate of the University of Colorado in 1962, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He then served in the Colorado National Guard.
He was an avid golfer and a voracious reader. Bill will be greatly missed by his many friends and loving family.
