AIKEN, SC - Caroline Eason Newman of Charleston, SC, a long-time resident of Aiken and Hilton Head Island passed away August 8, 2016 at the age of 95.
She was a graduate of the College of Charleston, and enlisted in the Women Army Corps (WAC) in 1942. She rose to the rank of Captain and was assigned to New Guinea where she met her late husband, Colonel Gilbert H. Newman, U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers (Retired).
After her retirement from teaching, she served as Executive Secretary to Joseph Frasier, who with his late brother Charles, developed Sea Pines Plantation, and donated the plot of land where St. Luke's Church recently began its 52nd year of operation.
Caroline and Bert served St. Luke's for many years as Director of Greeters and Ushers, a service she continued to perform at St. Thaddeus of Aiken, where she remained an active member until her passing.
She is survived by nieces and nephews and their families. She will be interred at Beaufort National Cemetery in a private service on August 12, 2016.
