My condolences to the family. Professor May was an instrumental mentor to me during my college journey. My bestie and I were his first female engineering students in the early 90’s! He was only 5 yrs older than I and didn’t like me calling him Mr May but I told him it was my deep respect for him that required me to do so! I contacted him 2 yrs ago and all he could talk about were his kids and grandkids. His sayings (we called them Mayisms) have been shared by me for years! May he rest in peace and his family find it also!

This may be too late to get much notice, but I have fond memories of Mike’s comments on the Faculty Assembly meetings at USC Aiken.
Those meetings were, and likely still are, occasions for a fair amount of verbiage that was easy pickings for a wit like Mike. My favorite example was his game of bingo, in which he would count the times that the buzz word of the moment was mentioned.
His levity was much appreciated in some corners of the room.

To the May family, I just learned of Mike’s passing and wish to pass along my condolences. Mike was a wardroom mate in 1973-74 on the USS McCandless. We stood many a bridge watch together during our deployment to the Indian Ocean, and Mike was a great teacher of all things nautical. I have many great memories of Mike on board and ashore (some of which I dare not relate!) and will think of him this Memorial Day.

Mike and I were colleagues at USC Aiken and our paths crossed and coincided often--from a project involving SRS and student workers in the early 1990's, to being members of the Vice Chancellor's Academic Council as department chairs (his was Math and Computer Science and mine was Chemistry and Physics), to serving on campus standing and ad hoc committees that did good things towards a better campus. Mike always wanted to make real contributions to those efforts, was always a conscientious professor, and had a great sense of humor. His observations at those times based on his experiences as a Commander in the navy I always found sound and I valued that input. Mike was always an excellent academic partner of mine and I'm glad I had the opportunity to work with him. My thoughts are with his many family members and friends.

"Professor May" was a mainstay for myself and many other Engineering Students at USCA. There was no doubt that he cared deeply and wanted us to do our best and wanted the best for us.
Mike often kept things interesting in the classroom. To end one semester it only seemed appropriate to present him with a tee-shirt with what we dearly called "Mayisms" (a collection of the tidbits of wisdom and sayings he had imparted over the year) printed on it. It is more than 20 years later and, when I meet other students who knew him, we still talk about his “Mayisms.”
He will be greatly missed and thought of often.
I'm thankful and grateful to have known Mike and appreciate how much he truly cared.

I am very sad to hear of Mike's passing. I worked at USC Aiken when he was Department chair. He seemed intimidating but was always kind. I also took classes part-time, and when I finally graduated with my BS in Math/Computer Science he made a point of hugging me during the graduation ceremony. It meant a lot to me. My condolences to his family.

I had the privilege of playing with Mike in the CarTunes band for a while, and it was such a wonderful experience for me! Mike was an incredible musician and singer, and he always gave it everything he had when he was leading a song. The responses that he got from the audience were amazing~ people loved him! We had so many great conversations, and shared so many laughs together with Mike, and he will be missed immensely. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace my friend. ❤️

I worked with Mike at USCA Aiken. I accompanied him to his 45th class reunion at the Naval Academy. Had lunch with his son. One the best I’ve ever known. And I’m heartbroken. He helped me so much around my house when I moved. Back in 2006 he told me he had a gig. I thought he was talking about computers. I would’ve never guessed he was in a rock ‘n’ roll band. I used to go to events with him. And at his house he would give me almonds and a scotch and water. He said almonds were brain food. He never had a dining room table. His living/dining room was his practice place. I had a baby grand piano and he would come over and play it for me. Love you Mike. I will miss you forever. Billie

Mike greatly impacted my life before I entered graduate school at the University of South Carolina and the University of Georgia. For several years, we used to ride together to umpire recreation baseball games, especially games at North Augusta Parks and Recreation and Gregg Park in Graniteville and Edgefield. In fact, when I was contemplating going to graduate school, he emphatically told me that “you can do it” on one of our long rides back to our USCA parking lot meeting place. Several years later, I finally reached my goal of becoming a history professor. In my early twenties, he trained me and taught me the nuances of proper positioning as an umpire. We also discussed how to interpret key rules and how to utilize stylistic techniques as an official to “pretend like we know what we are doing,” as Mike joked. Although I never had him as a professor at USCA, where I got my undergraduate in history, he was an outstanding and colorful umpire, and he was the funniest person I have ever met. He’s the main reason I eventually became an Aiken County high school umpire for several years, which occurred after he had retired from the game.
RIP, Mike. You were a treasure to me and so many others. Everyone who knew Mike knows what a great storyteller he was when around him. On a ride home one time, I have a vivid memory of him declaring how proud he was of his family and his “boys,” as he called them. He expressed that he was honored that he could support them and to see them grow into successful adults.

My heartfelt, deepest condolences to the May family on the loss of father, grandfather, brother, and professor, Mike. As a long-time member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at USC Aiken, Mike was my Department Chair. He was a fierce leader, supporter, and defender of everyone in the Department, and was always there to go to bat for any of his faculty. He was the glue that made our Department feel more like family - get-togethers and Department retreats at the May home were always special events. After he stepped down as chair, he stayed active in the Department - no one will ever forget the homemade ice cream he would often bring to school.
On a personal note, Mike was my biggest cheerleader at school. The confidence he put in me made me a better teacher. After my Dad passed in 2003, Mike was like a father to me. He was a mentor and dear friend. I shall miss his camaraderie, his smile, that mischievous twinkle in his eye, and all of the "colorful" jokes he brought from his service in the Navy.
Fair winds and following seas, Commander. Rest in Peace, and thank you.

Mike had a sharp wit with which he lightened the atmosphere in faculty assembly meetings as well as random conversations. He didn’t suffer fools gladly, as the saying goes. No doubt his students also found him a memorable professor.

I took every course Mike offered at USCA and the influence he had on my academic and professional career cannot be overstated. Mike would say “when you get your 1st job get out of your chair and go look at the problem!” And that exclamation mark is emphasized! He drove it into our heads to understand the problem before we try to solve it! These memories of Mike’s classes are still with me to this day 30+ years later. He cared about his students but never made it easy. He would always make time after class. After moving on to USC I was well prepared. I still have every problem I worked in Mike’s classes in binders. I was fortunate to have visited with him recently and told him I saved the work I did in his classes like he told me to. Mike asked me “Do you ever look at them?”. My reply was “yes sir”. I’m looking at some of them as I write this. I will always remember Mike. He was a good man and my favorite college professor.

Grandpa Mickey is one of the closest people to my heart. Every one of my childhood memories are shared with him and I am beyond grateful to be saying that. One of my favorite memories with my Grandfather is when I was little, he used to take me and my sister, Emma, to the park. He would pack our bikes, scooters, toy rockets, chalk, and anything we wanted in the trunk of his car. We would spend hours just enjoying the weather and each other’s company. If we ever went to the park the day after it rained, my sister and I would sit on the ground and make what we called, “mud pies”. Grandpa Mickey thought it was the funniest thing. One of the last times I got to see him, he reminded us about the days at the park and I will never forget that.

Mickey was a first cousin of mine & my memories go back many years. He & his sister Sandra spent several weeks in Sylacauga,Alabama with their grandparents when he was only two years old. Out Grandparents had a local grocery store & I was ten years old at this time and played & helped care for them. His favorite song that he sung was “CandyKisses wrapped In Paper” & favorite sandwich was a hot dog, which was a slice of bread & a vienna sausage with mustard.
In the Fall of 2022, my brother arranged a cousin reunion for the May cousins at his condo on Perdido Beach & six of us had a great time & shared & made many memories in three days…. Some met for the first time & ages were from the fifties to eighty-two. I am so thankful we all had this great time together. There is nothing like the love of a family & may God bring comfort to Mickey’s family during the days that follow.
