Obituary of Dan Raley

   Aiken, SC -  Shearin “Dan” Daniel Raley, 78, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers following an illness.

 

   Dan was born July 12, 1944 in Washington, DC to the late James Raley and Mary Shearin Raley. Sometime after moving to Hollywood, MD he was drafted by the United States Army to the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Dan returned to Washington, DC and worked for the Federal Government as the Director of Mortgage Credit for the “Ginnie Mae” organization. After retirement in 1999, Mr. Raley moved to Cape Coral, FL before making his way to Fort Myers, FL, where he lived on a farm to care for 6 horses. In 2006, Dan moved to another farm in Aiken with his 6 horses, 2 cats and his dog. After donating his 6 horses to a local organization, he moved to The Village of Woodside.  In November of 2021, he moved to Cumberland Village with his beloved dog, Summer Rain.

 

   During his time in Aiken, Dan was a sponsor for the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare.   This is where he rescued Summer Rain, “the Belle of the Ball” and “transformed her life by his love and devotion to her”.

 

   Mr. Raley is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law; Karl Torvik.

 

   He is survived by his brother, James D. Raley of Hollywood, MD; his sister, Rosalie Torvik of Bluffton, SC; 5 nieces and nephews; 6 great-nieces and nephews; and 2 great-great-nieces and nephews.

 

   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Dan’s name to the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, 199 Willow Run Road, Aiken, SC 29801.
