Lee, I don't know if you will remember me, but I am praying for you at this time, in this season. I knew nothing but good in you and in Mayor Cavanaugh. You were always humorous and, simultaneously, classy. Fred was simply a model servant leader. I am so sorry for your loss.

To Lee and Family,
What can be said? Fred was truly a one-of-a-kind person who was always positive and did his best to make Aiken a better place to live. I always enjoyed my interactions with him. The world has lost another good one. Please accept our sincere condolences.

We were so sorry to learn of Mayor Cavanaugh’s passing. We knew him and his family through their membership at Grace Church of Aiken for 30 years. He and Lee faithfully taught the “popcorn kids” on Sunday evenings. Our children were recipients of the character awards which he was instrumental in establishing in our community. He and Lee led our city with grace, dignity, and integrity. We were honored to call him “friend.”

I was an employee of several city and county governments during my working years, but, having grown up in Aiken, I always watched what was going on in this, "our fair city," Our Mayor Cavenaugh was always on top of things, in my opinion, and, having relatives and, a bit later myself and my personal family as members of our City for quite a while, I never saw anything that I felt needed to be done. Our Mayor was one good man and we were lucky to have had him as long as we did. God has him now, and I suspect he, too. is happy to have him. Thanks, Fred, for what you did while you were here. Hope I have a chance to see you again, someday. Stephen Vaughn Geddes

Q: What will you never forget about The Honorable Frederick?
A: There are many things I could write about here, but I chose to talk about the last time I got to see Uncle Freddy. Although that may seem like a sad thing to remember, it is actually something that I will remember forever. When I went to visit Uncle Freddy on October 8, 2022, it was the first time I had seen him when he was being cared for by hospice. He wasn’t necessarily the up and at em Uncle Freddy I had known as a child. What I remember most is how at peace he looked, as he listened to the sounds of birds and nature playing just for him. I got to hold his hand, tell him I loved him, feed him applesauce, but my favorite part was when we whistled together. It took everyone in the room by surprise when he finally let out a whistle because it was the first time he had done something like that since hospice had come in. The smiles on everyone’s faces and the laughs we shared are what I am going to remember the most from that moment, because that is when I realized he was still with us and will always be.
Love, Kate Herlong

Fred was my next door neighbor on Brandy Road in Aiken for many years while we were growing up. I always admired his enthusiasm and service to others and highly respected him. I remember that he went to VMI and served in a high ranking position while there as a cadet. He even encouraged me to attend a military college and I ended up graduating from The Citadel. And later on he served in a long list of responsible positions, including the Mayor of Aiken for 24 years. But best of all, he knew and loved the Lord and we will see him again someday when we graduate into Glory.

Mayor Fred Cavanaugh was one of the most talented and dedicated individuals I ever met. I was fortunate enough to serve in his City Council where I learned all about our beloved Aiken at his side. For decades, the name Fred Cavanaugh was synonymous with Aiken. The City of Aiken became nationally known due to Fred’s dedication and leadership. Zee and I will always cherish our memories of good times with Fred, Lee, and their family. Steve Homoki, Aiken City Council, Member at Large, 2009 – 2017.

Mr. Cavanaugh was a kind, helpful and generous gentleman. A hard worker with DuPont then Westinghouse. He always had a smile on his face and would always speak. We worked with Fred in Emergency Preparedness at SRP/SRS. A knowledgeable man, he made our job enjoyable. Thank you Fred.

In 2005 I met Mayor Fred Cavanaugh before my first worship service as pastor serving St Paul Lutheran Church. It was a Saturday morning and a group from St Paul was putting the roof on a house for Habitat for Humanity. The group leader was literally introducing me as his new pastor to the men on the roof; one of which was Mayor Cavanaugh! Really; I thought to myself; really, the mayor out working as a volunteer on a Saturday morning. In a concrete way I knew from that first encounter the mayor truly cared about all his people and Aiken was a special community to have his leadership. He was the definition of a caring “servant leader”. Well done good and faithful servant.

I served as Mayor of North Augusta for many years while Fred served as Aiken’s Mayor. We served on committees together and attended many of the same meetings to represent our respective cities. Fred was always professional, businesslike and a great ambassador for Aiken. He always had Aiken’s best interests first and foremost in his actions.
He was an old fashioned public servant who had no political agenda for personal advancement. Every city needs more servants like Fred.

Mayor Cavanaugh was a wonderful man. As a City of Aiken employee I had several interactions with him and every single one I was greeted with a smile and his undivided attention. It was always easy to see that he cared about the community and definitely valued those of us that worked for it. A kind and caring man that will always be treasured.
