Judge Sherrill frightened many a young attorney back in the day, but I started recognizing that sparkle in his eye and barely visible smirk; even at his most frustrated. Thank you for sharing him with us-- I am glad I was able to share the law with him.

Janet, I am very sorry for your loss. So many happy memories of time with you and Rusty at the beach and on various sailing adventures. He was a wonderful friend -- someone you could trust and talk with about anything, one of the most caring, thoughtful and gentle people I've had the pleasure to know. We always looked forward to seeing you both in "our" church pews at Edenton Street - Rusty with his sweet smile and you with your warm and engaging personality (and often hearing about the most recent travel experience). I can still see him riding up on his Tiger Cub and sacking out in my back bedroom on Goldson Avenue in Carrboro during law school. As years passed, I spent many nights as their guest on McDonald Lane following wonderful meals shared wiith Rusty and Janet at Piccolo Mondo. He was truly one of a kind in the best of ways, and I treasure our friendship. Mike Flanagan.

Rusty was a lovely, kind, funny, gentle and precious person whose footprint is left far and wide with the multitude of lives he touch and enriched. The world and our lives are richer by far for knowing him. He deeply loved his dear wife, Janet, and his many friends to whom he was a true friend indeed.
