I had the opportunity to work for CAPT Lindell when he was CO of the FBMSTC in Charleston. As an E-6 on shore duty, he found out I was interested in becoming a nuclear trained submarine officer and called me to his office. Working with my Department/Division, I was assigned to the second shift permanently which allowed me to attend the College of Charleston during the daytime. I was able to earn enough credits to be selected for the ECP program and was commissioned after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in mechanical engineering. I was fortunate to be selected for nuclear propulsion training and retired after twenty years of service.
As I reflect, I often think of those many leaders (Officer and Enlisted) who invested their time and energy to allow others to pursue their dreams and goals. How selfless...
CAPT Lindell was such a man, and I am saddened to learn of his passing, but also very grateful for his inspiration and confidence in me (and countless others).

Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Auburn University

Shelley and Family,
I am sorry to hear of this so late. Cole was the CO of Nathan Hale for my Engineer tour. He tolerated me better far better than I deserved.
Barbara shares my sorry in this news. We remember you both with fondness and pray for the support you all need in this difficult time.

Shelley and Family - Cole was my executive officer onboard the USS Patrick Henry back in the 70's. He was one of my heroes. I tried to pattern my service life following his example of professionalism, care for his people on the ship, and how to have a great time. He was a big hearted man. Look forward to seeing him someday in Heaven. Praying for you and your family.

Cole was an extraordinary man who loved his wife, his wonderful children and our country. His faith in God was always evident in his life. My heart goes out to his wife Shelley, who loved him so very much and his children who always were by his side. I know he is reunited with his beautiful daughter Maggie and they will both look down on their family with love.
Shelley...may your memories of a beautiful life and love sustain you.
Rest In Peace Captain..

How appropriate that Cole passed on Veteran’s Day I did not have the pleasure of knowing Cole when he was a member of the military, but I knew him as a fellow parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley and St. Mary’s Catholic Churches. Cole had many ups and downs in his life and always faced them with courage. Part of his ups was his beautiful wife Shelley and all his children and boy did he need courage with them!
I always wondered why Shelley and Cole adopted children, especially handicapped children, later in life. After I got to know the family better, I found the reason to be LOVE and a great sense of duty to God to complete their mission for Him.
I knew Maggie, Cole, Anne , and Allie pretty well. I taught Maggie and Cole when they first came to America. They were such a joy. aAllie and I were confirmed together. And I love Anne for her ability to sing her heart out.
Cole will be greatly missed by all. Please remember we loved him too.

Shelley and Family, please accept my deepest and sincere sympathy for your loss of Cole. I was a classmate of Cole's in the adjoining USNA Companies of 14 and 17 and then a Submariner. Most of my Service was in Pearl Harbor so Cole and I didn't have much contact as we both navigated through our Navy careers towards Command and beyond. Tom O'Brien sent me additional information on Cole and your Family of which I was not aware. I am in awe of your obvious commitment to raising your Family with love and care. Cole can absolutely claim his legacy of being a loving Husband and Father so that the two of you were abla to create and shepherd so many future wonderful citizens of this Land. Cole has found a "special place" in Heaven from which he can smile and look down on what he's accomplished for future generations.
Jerry Jordan USNA '63 and Proud Submariner

Betty and I were saddened to learn of Cole's passing. Though we saw them infrequently, it was always clear that Cole and Shelly's mutual love for their children, and their commitment to raising the children in a Christian home, make them a special couple. Cole will be missed,
Kent Maxfield, USNA '63

To Shelley and the wonderful Lindell family: We share your sorrow at the passing of Cole and offer our most sincere condolences. We remember Cole as a classmate and leader of our USNA Class of 1963; as a fellow Submariner who dedicated a life of service to our nation during the Cold War, keeping us safe from the threat of terrible conflict; as a friend who brought joy and happiness to us at Naval Academy social and athletic events during our retirement years. Thank you for his exemplary life of service, and May God bless him and keep him.
Capt. & Mrs. Robert E LaGassa, USN(Ret)
