Obituary of Carl R Adkins

Carl R. Adkins, M.D., 61, of Aiken, died Feb. 2, 2006, in the Aiken Regional Medical Center. He was born July 16, 1944, in Holden, WV, son of the late Carl L. Adkins and Louise Adkins. He is survived by his wife, Susan Hanlin Adkins, of Aiken, SC, a son, Jonathan Adkins of Arlington, VA, and a sister, Frances Povlich.
He earned undergraduate and medical degrees from West Virginia University and a MBA from Wake Forest. For eleven years, he served as a family practitioner in Fayetteville, WV. He was also elected WV State Medical Association President. Additionally, he was chief of staff at the Raleigh General Medical Center in Beckley, WV, and he was an executive in managed care with national medical care corporations.
He and his wife retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina, in 1998. As a member of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, he served as the clerk of session, a deacon, and as a teacher in an after school program. He and his wife moved to Aiken, SC, in late 2005.
Dr. Adkins was an avid sports enthusiast; he frequently played golf and tennis. He was a devoted fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also held a private pilot?s license with an IFR rating.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, S.C.
