Funeral services for Mr. E. C. Pirkle, Jr. will take place on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 2pm at St. John's United Methodist Church, Aiken with Rev. George Howle officiating. Interment will take place on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 2pm at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, GA. Memorial donations may be directed to St. John United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St. NW Aiken, SC 29801 or to University of Florida, Dept. of Geological Sciences, PO Box 112120 Gainesville, FL, 32611 Mr. Pirkle, 88, of Aiken, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. He received AB and MS from Emory University and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. During WWII he worked at Pan-Electronics Laboratories designing and administering mass-production techniques for the production of oscillators. He developed the secret radio codes used at the invasion of Normandy. Afterwards he taught 3 years at the University of Tennessee and 43 years at the University of Florida. At the University of Florida he held a variety of academic and administrative positions including Professor of Geology, Professor of Geography, Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences, Director of the Physical Sciences Program in the University College, Associate Chair of the Department of Geography, and Associate Chair of the Department of Geology. He published numerous articles in the professional literature and authored 4 textbooks one of which, "Natural Landscapes of the United States," was adopted in hundreds of colleges and universities. He was a fellow of the Geological Society of America and a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, American Institute of Professional Geologists, American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical & Petroleum Engineers, Society of Economic Geologists, Sigma Xi, and Phi Beta Kappa. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Aiken and was lifelong Methodist. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Valda Greene Pirkle, Aiken, SC, two sons; William A. Rachel Pirkle, Aiken, SC and Frederic L Sandra Pirkle, St. Augustine, FL He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
