This is truly a sad day for me. EC taught me more about geology from trips to field and his Socratic interrogations than I ever learned from a book. It was always a pleasure to listen to him and his unusual speech pattern, no matter the topic. The names of Pirkle and Yoho will remain forever engraved in the memory of many geologists in Florida and the Southeast.
We were saddened to learn of Dr. Pirkle's death this week. As a neighbor and long time member of First Methodist Church, we have many fond memories of our times together. He was always pushing the church to give as much for others as for ourselves and that is something that is greatly needed in these changing times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Dr. Pirkle was an inspiring science educator at the University of Florida with a delightful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Pirkle was a legendary geologist and a very memorable person. As one of my father's personal friends, I knew him for most of my life. I had the honor of sharing many stimulating and pleasant conversations with him at the numerous geological meetings and field trips where our paths crossed.
E.C. was an important person in so many geologists careers. I enjoyed time in the field with him and some memorable discussions. We did not always agree but I admired him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
