Obituary of Gloria Conroy Marx
Please share a memory of Gloria to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gloria Conroy Marx passed away at the Aiken Regional Medical Center on September 3, 2010 at the age of 86. Born April 20, 1924 in Burlington, New Jersey, she was the daughter of William S. and Helen Horn Conroy and sister of USAAC pilot William S. Conroy, Jr., who lost his life during WWII.
Mrs. Marx attended Southern Seminary College for Women in Buena Vista, Virginia where she met her husband-to-be of sixty four years, Edmund W. Marx deceased who was attending college at Washington and Lee University in nearby Lexington. After college she served as a WAVE in the military air transport service during the final stages of the war. She later attended the University of South Carolina where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Education.
Gloria Marx will be remembered by many as an insightful individual who wielded a sharp intellect but may have been better known for her sense of humor and love of fun. As a teacher of second and third grades at Aiken Elementary School for nearly 30 years, she challenged the minds and delighted the imaginations of hundreds of fortunate students. Not only did she make learning fun, she transfixed her students with stories ranging from mythological tales of bravery and heroism on Mt. Olympus to colorful narratives of her own personal mischief in her girlhood home in NJ.
An unapologetic lover of music, she adored the songs of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer, to name an important few. Her record collection was stocked with almost everything Sinatra ever recorded, but also included selected works of age-inappropriate artists that caught her ear through the years such as Stevie Wonder and the Bee Gees.
In the role she played in the hearts and lives of her family and friends, Gloria will be irreplaceable. She was tremendously loved and will be missed by many. She is survived by her four children, Bill Marx of Newport, RI, Marilyn M. Kogan Robert of Aiken, Christina M. Hampton of Olive Branch, MS, and Brian L. Marx Lisa of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren Stephen and Jessica Marx; Mark, Andrew and Alan Hampton; Bradley and Natalie Marx; as well as great-granddaughters Stella and Ava Marx; and a devoted friend Robert Trow of Aiken.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. followed immediately by a reception at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry Street in Aiken. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to The National Federation of the Blind, 200 E. Wells St., Baltimore, MD 21230 or Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center is assisting the family.
