A Funeral Liturgy for Mr. Robert D. Helmig will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 11am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Aiken. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Helmig, 57, of Aiken, died Saturday September 9, 2006 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. He was born in Pekin, IL and had lived in East Peoria, IL before moving to Aiken in 1986.
He proudly served two tours of duty with the USAF during the Viet Nam Conflict with the 335th Tactical Squadron as a crew chief on an AC119 gunship and he was a member of the AC119 Gunship Combat Air Crew Association.
Before retiring last year, Mr. Helmig had worked as a mechanic at ASCO in Aiken for 15 years. In Peoria, he worked for the US Postal Service. He had been a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Church in Aiken and St. Mary?s Church in Peoria.
Mr. Helmig was predeceased by his father, Paul R. Helmig and a brother, Steven Robert Helmig. He is survived by his wife, Debra Burns Helmig, Aiken; a son, Milo Helmig, Aiken; a daughter, Tabatha Helmig, Aiken; his mother and step-father, Ruth Ann & Lester W. Paxton, Aiken; a brother, Paul Roger Helmig, Pekin, IL; and a sister, Ruth Ann ?Dutch? Wolfe, Williamsfield, IL. Mr. Helmig is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
