Edward Rice, 84, of Aiken, passed away suddenly on October 27, 2012. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date and will be private for family members. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, Aiken is assisting the family. The son of the late Leonard and Marie Hallahan Rice, he was born in Worcester, MA and made Aiken his home in 2000, enjoying many rounds of golf during his years here. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as Chief of Survey and Forward Observer for a field artillery battalion. After completing his tour of duty in the Army, he attended Worcester State University where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education. He did advanced graduate work at New York University and Harvard University. During his career in education, he served as classroom teacher, elementary school principal, elementary level supervisor, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Instruction and Superintendent of Schools in New York State. He also served as Chairman of the Instructional Council for the Board of Cooperative Services which served school districts in Putnam and Westchester counties in New York. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Rice. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Dalbeck Rice; a daughter Christina Clements; a son, Paul Rice; two grandchildren, Gary and Rachel Greweling; a sister, Geraldine Foty and several nieces and nephews.
