Pauline Lyon Swope, 88, died March 14, 2004 at Eden Gardens in Aiken, SC where she had been living since July 1999. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday March 17, 2004 at 4pm at St. John?s United Methodist Church, Aiken with Rev Sheila Rogers and Rev. M. Eugene Mullikin officiating. Burial will be in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Born in Henry County, Iowa, July 26, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Frank Watson Lyon and Ethel Payne Lyon. Mrs. Swope was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Swope and one daughter, Paula Jean Swope. Mrs. Swope grew up on a farm in Iowa. She graduated from High School a year early, at age 16, and was valedictorian of her class. The depression of four years, kept her from furthering her education. Subsequently, she taught in one-room schoolhouse grades 1-8, and attended summer sessions at Iowa State Teachers College, graduating with a Bachelor in Elementary Education in 1941. While there, she was in several sororities; Kappa Delta Phi, a scholastic sorority for the top ten percent of her class; Kappa Phi Beta Alpha, a sorority for teachers- kindergarten through primary grades; and Kappa Phi, the campus United Methodist Women?s group, of which she was a president. Miss Pauline Lyon at that time taught second and third grade in Burlington, Iowa from 1941 to 1953. During that time she attended summer sessions at the University of Minnesota, obtaining a Master in Education in 1950. Miss Lyon taught at Burlington Junior College from the fall of 1952 to February 1953 when she came to Aiken, to marry a widower, Robert Lee Swope and help care for his only child Janet, then 12, Mrs. Swope was a member of St. John?s United Methodist Church where she was active in all phases of church life. Some of these include, past president of the WSCS, Vacation Bible School coordinator, Sunday school teacher, and a presiding force over many committees. She was an active member of the Henry Middleton Chapter of the DAR on the local and state level; The Parent-Teacher Association; The White Shrine, where she rose to the position of Worthy Matron; a Girl Scout leader; a bridge club member and was active in the Cereus Garden Club. Survivors include one son, Charles Lee Swope, a daughter, Janet Swope Wade, son-in-law Charles Barry Wade; three grandchildren, John Barry Wade, Robert Swope Wade and wife Kathryn Kling Wade, of Aiken, Marie Wade Stephens and husband James L. Stephens of Thomson, GA and one nephew, Thomas Dale Lyon, Oxford, PA. Four great grandchildren, John Christopher Wade, Wade Thomas Gordy, III, Janet Leigh Gordy and Seth Andrew Wade also survive. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons. Memorials may be made to St. John?s United Methodist Church, PO Box 809 Aiken, SC 29802.
