Obituary of Sophie Gaubatz Mills
Please share a memory of Sophie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Sophie G. Mills, 81, of Aiken, went to join Jesus on Monday, August 28, 2007 at Heartland Hospice, Augusta. Sophie had a sweet and loving spirit and was born in Yugoslavia in 1925. Her heroic journey led her from a refugee camp in Austria, having her son separated from her at age 9 months, marrying an American Soldier, Sgt. Henry Mills, who preceded her in death in 1976. Her parents, Christian Gaubatz and Elizabeth Gaubatz both of Germany and one sister and four bothers from Germany also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sisters Magdlena Zwood of France and Hermine Keller of Germany, her son, Mihalo Mike Der of Augusta, GA, granddaughters Renata Cojic Nicholas of Parma, OH and Snezana Der of Belgrade, Serbia, great-granddaughter Paulina Cojic of Parma, OH and many nieces and nephews in Germany.
Sophie's life has been an incredible journey teaching those who know her to have: faith in our redeeming God, a powerful work ethic and a love for family and friends. Sophie has been a dedicated employee of the Murray Biscuit Company in Augusta and Owens Corning Fiberglass in Aiken. She has been a top notch housekeeper, and an extraordinary cake baker for all families who have had the opportunity to know and love her.
Her life will be celebrated on Monday, Sep. 3, 2007 at 11am Bethel Baptist Church in Aiken, SC with the Rev. Brancie Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10am until the hour of service. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
