Sophie was a very kind lady and a dear friend. I met Sophie in 1986 through my friend Katy Lipscomb. Sophie had a great reputation for being a trusted and immaculate housekeeper. Sophie helped us weekly around the house for many years. She was like part of our family. When we had a birthday or there was a holiday, she always baked a wonderful cake. Then she became unable to work. For the last 10 or so years, I would visit Sophie each Sunday after church and bring her groceries and lunch. If she was feeling good that Sunday, we would go to lunch at the Waffle House. She loved to go there to visit Jay and the other staff members who loved her. I would also take her to visit Mike in Augusta for the last several years. No matter how bad she was feeling, she always asked about my husband Mark and my family. During her last few months, she asked me to help her with medical and legal affairs, which I accepted.Joan Herron, Ursulla Mitchell and her son Andrew were very supportive and loving to Sophie. Sophie must be pleased to know that Renata and Nick came to Aiken to say goodbye to her. My goal is to honor Sophie's wishes and see that Mike is taken care of to the best of her ability, even after her death.
The night before Sophie died, I stayed up with her praying the words that she tought me, "Come Jesus be our guest" and instead of finishing with "and thank you for the food that you have placed on our table" I finished up the prayer, "and take Sophie from her suffering into heaven to be with you and her loved ones in heaven."
