Obituary of Marie Killen Deans

Mrs. Marie Killen Deans, 90, a long-time resident of Aiken, died on November 16, 2010 in Marietta, Georgia after a long illness. Mrs. Deans was known for her active involvement in what was then the small, but growing town, of Aiken, South Carolina.
Mrs. Deans served as a practicing nurse during the World War II era before moving to Aiken in 1952 with her husband, the late Parker Deans, who was one of the start-up chemical engineers at the Savannah River Site. She and Mr. Deans were founding members of the Mead Hall Episcopal Day School, Fermata Swim and Tennis Club and Aiken Community Playhouse. She served as President of the Central Savannah River Area Girl Scout Council from 1967 to 1971. In addition, she was an active member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church from her arrival in Aiken in 1952 until she moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2008 to be with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Parker, and a sister, Emily. She is survived by two daughters; Peggy Deans Karelitz and Catherine Deans Giesecke, and one sister; Jennie Patterson Killen, Moultrie, Georgia. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Faith DuBose Zaucha, Jenny Flannagan, Matt Giesecke, Kristen Giesecke and Stuart Giesecke, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thaddeus Church, Aiken. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will then receive friends in the Cheetham Parlor adjacent the church.
