Obituary of Tommy Adams
Please share a memory of Tommy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy Thomas Adams, Jr., known affectionately to all as "Tommy", died Saturday, June 7, 2008, surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Aiken, South Carolina. Tommy was born February 6, 1943, in Washington D.C., the son of the late Roy Thomas & Ruth Moody Adams of Atlanta, Georgia.
Tommy was a warm, loving, and devoted husband, father, and friend. He never met a stranger and will remain a shining light in the hearts of those who loved him. Tommy was an accomplished angler who also loved to hunt with his lifelong friends, cook beautiful meals for his family and friends, tie flies, and tell long stories. He never forgot a name, left a lasting impression on everyone, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Tommy grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1961. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 1974 and a Masters Degree in Counseling in 1977 from the University of South Carolina. He honorably served in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years.
He married Julianne Pilster McGraw, niece of the late Annie H. King from Aiken, in 1966, and moved to Aiken in 1968, where he took a position at the Aiken Standard & Review in advertising sales. Tommy founded Heritage Cleaners, which he sold years later. His true calling was in education, working at the Child Study Center at Kalmia Hill, Schofield Middle School, Kennedy Middle School, Silver Bluff High School, and New Ellenton Middle School. Tommy retired from the Aiken County School District in 2007 after 18 years of service.
Tommy selflessly gave of himself and became a founding member of the Aiken Sertoma Club, was active in the Aiken Rotary and served for ten years on the Board of the Kidney Benefit.
Tommy also enjoyed the "Choir Practice" his poker club.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Julianne Pilster McGraw Adams; his sons, Roy Thomas Adams, III Abbey of Charleston S.C. and Benjamin King Adams of Aiken; his brother, Charles Allen Adams Sue, of Fayetteville, Ga.; and his sister, Judy Adams Horton Larry of Clayton, Ga.; his sister-in-law, Sissy Ruffe Steven of Coral Gables, Fl.; and brother-in-law, George Mehallis of Travernier, Fl.; four nephews, two nieces, eight great-nephews and one great-niece.
