Johanna S. Patchan, 85, of Aiken, died February 21 at Mattie C. Hall Nursing Home. Born on December 27, 1921 in Czechoslovakia, she emigrated to the United States in September 1934. She was the spouse of Matthew A. Patchan, who died in 1997. Mrs. Patchan graduated from Stephen S. Palmer High School, in Palmerton, Pa. in 1941 and attended Rider College in Trenton N.J. She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1944 and married in 1948. She enjoyed a long career as a homemaker and a Federal government employee, retiring from Federal service and her position with the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981. Mrs. Patchan was an active member of the Queens of the Knights Auxiliary of the St. Pius X Council #4016 in Forestville, Md. and served as its president from 1985-87. She and her husband relocated to Aiken in 1995 and were parishioners of St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church. Mrs. Patchan was a happy resident of Cumberland Village since 1999 and was known by her friends as a competitive bingo player. Survivors include four children: Bryan Patchan of Frederick, Md.; Elaine Parry and husband Francis of Clarksburg, Md.; Janet Melvin and husband Randy of Yarmouth, Maine; and Robert Patchan and wife Tracy of Aiken. She also had six grandchildren; Adam and Nathan Parry, Justin and Ryan Melvin, and Agatha and Seth Patchan. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 26, 2007 from 3-5pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
