Obituary of Augustine John Gorman

A longtime resident of Aiken, SC, Mr. Gorman was born on November 19, 1918 in Lowell, MA to parents John and Jane Curtin Gorman, "AJ", as he was known by all died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
He was orphaned at an early age and raised in Catholic orphanages in New York state. From the age of 12 to 18, he resided at Father Baker's Orphanage in Lackawana, NY. He served Monsignor Nelson H. Baker at the altar many times and always gave credit to Fr. Baker's for giving him a sound education, guidance and skills and his lifelong faith. AJ left Fr. Baker's in 1936, returning on a pilgrimage to see the old orphanage buildings and the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory National Shrine in 2002.
AJ Gorman served his country during WWII and retired from the US Air Force in 1961. He served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1961 until his retirement in 1979, at American Embassies in Peru, England, Iraq, Cyprus, Turkey, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Thailand, Israel and Egypt.
AJ was an avid sports enthusiast and lifelong tennis player. He was a member of Houndslake Country Club of Aiken, S.C. and played on the Men's Seniors Team until 2007. Playing tennis three days a week was his passion and the source of many friendships.
Survivors are four children and their spouses: Nancy Ann Armstrong James A. Lynn of Atlanta, GA, Diane Mary Barlow Joseph F. Barlow of Brighton, Ontario, John Patrick Gorman Mikell Gorman of San Diego, CA, and Barbara Joan Bajek Michael L. Bajek of Culpeper, VA. Additional family are grandchildren, Heather Barlow Van Blairicom William, Aaron Bajek Jisun, John G. Armstrong, Kane Bajek and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Nicholas Nelson; nieces, Maureen Reilly, Barbara Roland Milliard, Lorraine Bue and nephew, George Gorman, all of Lowell, MA. He was predeceased by his wife, Corinne Cornelia Edwards Gorman, grandson, Daniel B. Armstrong, niece, Jane Gorman Reilly, sister, Mary Christine Gorman and four brothers, John C. Gorman, James J. Gorman, Frank P. Gorman and George P. Gorman.
A Funeral Mass for Mr. Gorman will be celebrated at St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken, on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center is assisting the family.
