Obituary of Wilbur Clanton Mosley

W. Clanton Mosley, Jr., 69, of Aiken, SC, beloved husband, father, grand-father, brother and friend went to be with the Lord on December 1, 2007. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Millbrook Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Knotts and Rev. Eddie Leopard officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Saints Alive Sunday school class of Millbrook. The family will receive friends Friday, December 7 at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave, SW, Aiken from 5-7 p.m.
Dr. Mosley was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 30, 1938. He earned his bachelor and master?s degrees in engineering physics from Auburn University. He continued his studies in physics at the University of Alabama where he received his doctorate degree. He served active duty in the US Army as a 2nd Lt. and attained the rank of Captain while in the reserves. He moved to Aiken in 1965 and was employed by E. I. DuPont. After 30 years of service, he retired from Westinghouse Savannah River Company, Technology Center. During his employment, Dr. Mosley earned the SRTC Vice Presidents Award, received numerous recognitions and was named on several patents and publications. After retirement, he was employed by Southeastern Technologies Center as a Program Manager for the Hydrogen Fuel Bus demonstration project.
Clanton enjoyed spending time with his two children and five grandchildren. He contributed his musical talent by directing music in several area churches including Foreman Memorial Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Belvedere, First Baptist Church Jackson, Talatha Baptist Church, and interim music director at First Baptist Church Johnston and Corinth Baptist Church. He also served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school Outreach Director. He played his cornet as a member of the Aiken Community Band and at local charity functions. As an Eagle Scout, he volunteered his services to local Boy Scout groups in Alabama and South Carolina.
Clanton?s favorite hobby was researching his genealogy by traveling the region exploring libraries, cemeteries, archives, family albums and Bibles, newspapers and courthouse records. Through his efforts he succeeded in tracing his family history back to 1600 colonial America. Clanton served as president of the Shackelford-Mosley Family Association for the past 16 years. He also composed periodic newsletters for the family association and kept the family trees and genealogical records updated.
Clanton was the son of the late Wilbur Clanton Mosley, Sr. and Clare Thomas Mosley. He is survived by his wife, Betty, son, Ben Marcia Mosley of Vidalia, Georgia, daughter, Mary Elizabeth Grady Whitlaw of Aiken, grandchildren, Pamela and Jeffrey Mosley of Vidalia, James, Daniel and Elizabeth Whitlaw of Aiken, and his sister, Ethel Elaine Donald Torina of Tampa, Florida.
