Obituary of Collett Blackburn Whittington

Please share a memory of Collett to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
AIKEN, SC - Collett "Dick" Blackburn Whittington Jr., age 69, entered into rest Sunday, October 1, 2017, at his residence in Aiken, South Carolina after an extended illness. He had been battling COPD for the past several years, along with heart disease. Dick was born December 19, 1947 in Charleston, WV to the late Collett Blackburn Whittington Sr. and the late Hallie Jordan Whittington. His dad died in 1996, and his mother just passed away on August 1st. He was a true West Virginian, but had made Florida his home for most of his adult life. However, when his illness progressed he moved to Aiken to be close to his family. Dick graduated from Sissonville High School, Class of 1965, and attended Shepherd College. He first started his career with General Motors, IBM, owned his own company and later through his friendship with Bill Schrader, started a career with Recovery Resources, where he retired in 2014, as the Executive Director. He was a proud member of the NRA, and The Tea Party and vigorously loved his country. He is survived by two sisters, Shelia Whittington and Cathie Whittington Adams, and Dee Dolin whom he considered a sister, all of Aiken, SC; a niece, Whitney Jordan Adams, Clemson, SC; aunts and uncles, Larry & Kathy Jordan, Jerry & Kitty Jordan, Wyonia Jordan, and Emily Jordan; as well as special friends, and lots of cousins.: Although Dick had no biological brothers, he considered Dave Waugh, Tommy Treadwell and Frank Rutledge his brothers. He truly loved you guys and appreciated all of your visits, calls and most of all the embellished stories you each told over the years and especially during his illness. Dick did not have any children, but considered his dear friend Michelle Schrader like a daughter. He loved and appreciated all Michelle did for him while he was living in Florida and he could not have stayed in the place he loved so long had it not been for her sacrificial love and help. Very special thanks to all of you. Two other people he deeply loved and appreciated was Audrey Mendoza and her daughter Andrea. Dick was the most wonderful brother to his sisters and a proud uncle to his niece and she affectionately refers to him as UD. He loved the holidays, especially Christmas, and his excitement always made them more special. He truly loved the simple things in life and lived life to the fullest. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 6, 2017 in the chapel of Floral Hills Gardens of Memories Mausoleum, 6839 Sissonville Dive, Charleston, WV 25320. The family will receive friends at the chapel Friday from 1:30 PM until the hour of service. Dick's longtime friends, Sam Spade will officiate the service and Dave Waugh will deliver his eulogy. If flowers are sent they must be delivered to the Mausoleum Chapel at Floral Hills, but in lieu of flowers you may consider a memorial contribution directed to The American Heart or Lung Association. George Funeral Home, Aiken, SC (803.649.6234) is assisting the family.
