My sister, Beth and I remember a truly wonderful family who welcomed us to Chukker Creek in 1974. And we soon fell in love with the gentle strength of Herb Witter. He certainly was a great man as well as a terrific teacher and neighbor. We both wish the entire Witter family peace during this most difficult time. May God bless you and keep you. -Carol & Beth Johnson

Herb held a very special place in my heart. For 13 years he was like another grandfather to me. He was an incredible person with the biggest, most loving heart. I will certainly miss his smile, it lit up the room.
Kayla, your story really touched me. I don't know of that particular story, but I can certainly picture him laughing at you and just walking as slow as he could to get to you. I cherish all of our family get togethers and the times we spent together with him.
I'm so incredibly sorry. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
With Much Love,
Brandi, Chad, Noah, and Jonah Polatty

Herb was my very best friend. I use to ask him, "I wonder why you are in my life, and you in mine?" I know now why. He gave me great joy, comfort, love, laughter, confidence, strength, and more love. He will always be in my heart, soul, and thoughts. I will miss him greatly, until we all see him again and rejoice.
Love to the family and strength for your days

Your daddy's funderal today was wonderful... in a way that "wonderful" does not communicate. As a man and as head of your family he has given all who knew him a lesson in what it means to be a man, a friend and a Christian brother. Now that he has gone home I am more aware than ever of the blessings from him that I so often took for granted and more thankful than ever that God made us neighbors years ago. Your daddy and each of you have been a blessing many many times, and I give thanks for you all.

We are a neighbor, on Chukker Creek Road and a fellow worshipper at Cedar Creek Church. We loved and respected Mr. Witter. He loved and enjoyed his farm and farm animals. We remember him best retrieving all the left over yeast rolls at Ryans that customers would not eat/leave behind to give to his cows. He talked about how they loved the pudding too. We will miss him so much. I know he is dancing around the throne and worshipping Jesus. To the Witter family, please know that you are in our constant thoughts and prayers and that God is with you always.

Seeing all of the faces at the visitation and service today brought such a smile to my face. Papa had so many people who loved him. Many people had the blessing of knowing him as a wonderful friend, but did not have the privaledge of knowing him as a wonderful grandfather. All of his grandchildren had such special memories with him. One of my favorite memories of Papa was when my best friend Jimmy and I thought we could handle feeding the cows by ourselves while he did other farm work. Papa told us to wait on him, but no, we could handle it. So we carried the many bags of Ryans rolls into the fence and began throwing them out. Within two minutes all of the cows were standing face to face with Jimmy and I, while pushing us up against the fence. I knew my life had come to an end right then and there, and I immediately started screaming for Papa. I certainly thought he would come running through the yard with some sort of tool to beat the cows off of us, but all I heard was a laugh. Papa came strolling across the yard, at a very slow pace, shaking his head. And what seemed like hours later but was probably 1 or 2 minutes, my Papa saved us from, what I thought at that time were flesh eating cows, and all he did was laugh. That was years ago and I can still see the smile on his face. He was the glue that held this family together, and he will be missed more than words can describe. And strictly for the fact that I am an English teacher, it is hard to be at a loss for words, but I have been ever since Thursday night when his goose couldnâ??t even find the â??wordsâ? to describe our loss. Thank you Papa for all that you did and will continue to do for us. I would do anything to have one more of your hugs.

I was deeply saddened when I found out about Mr Witter. I know that he is in Heaven looking over his family and friends at this very moment. I worked for the Aiken Ryans for 14yrs and I looked so forward to seeing Mr Witter and his smiling face walk through the door. He would not walk by me without giving me a hug and a kiss. He was such a loving, caring, understanding man and I know he will be truely missed. His family is in my thoughts and prayers. I know that the atmosphere at Ryans during lunch and supper will not be the same without "The Bread Man".

Dear Oleen, Herb, Milisa, Cindy, Reneè, and Aimee
Marilyn and I are saddened to hear of Herbertâ??s sudden passing. We can be comforted to know that he is with Jesus.
Our growing-up-years were the â??good old days.â? Herb, Betty Lou, Dottie, Marilyn and I had great adventures playing all over the Witter farm, from Hide and Seek in the big barn not there now to picking blueberries, gathering nuts, and skiing on the hill. The 3 Bordeaux boys across the street joined us many times. All 8 of us went to the same Church. Every summer the 5 of us cousins went to the Humarock Beach cottage.
Later, when Herb had a car, he would take us for a ride as we sat in the rumble seat in the back. In the winter, he drove us around Millbury with the horse and sleigh. We felt so special.
Herbert was a precious man, as is his family. The 2004 reunion in Aiken is a sweet memorable time that we will always treasure.
With Deepest Sympathy and Love,
Marjorie Cowland Crowder and Marilyn Cowland Fox

I would like to express my sympathy to the family. I hope you are finding comfort in the time you spent with your dear loved one. Please find comfort in the hope expressed in the Bible at Revelation 21:3,4 where it tells us that mourning, pain, and death will be things of the past. I hope you find comfort in this hope. Feel free to email me to comment or if you have questions. Again, please accept my condolences.

I met Herb 5 years ago in a local nursing home. He was the power of attorney for one of the nursing home residents. During 'my time' with Herb he shared photos and memories of his younger days in Massachusetts and vacations at the beach cottage. He was so Real, so Honest, so Humble, Gracious, Kind and Caring. He made an Impact on my life and I pray I Never forget him. I'll miss you, Herb. God, be with his family and friends.
