Catherine "Kay" Bernadette Smith Pickett entered into eternal life May 31, 2008 in Aiken, South Carolina. Catherine was born August 10, 1931 in Glasgow, Scotland. She attended St. Aloysius Catholic School in Glasgow. Catherine often spoke of the war years in Glasgow 1939 - 1945. She remembered having to carry a gas mask to school, the barrage balloons, and search lights at night. Glasgow was a large shipbuilding complex for the British Navy; and a prime target for the German Air Force. Nightly air raids on the shipyards were frequent during the war years, sending Catherine and her family to the air raid shelters. She fondly remembered the large amount of American military personnel stationed there during the war. She left her family in 1954 to come to the United States for a job in Chicago, IL. It was there she met and married John Douglas Pickett, U.S.N. EN1SS, a submarine sailor, on December 10, 1955. During Catherine's fifty-two year marriage 22 years as a Navy wife and mother she traveled the world. She was stationed with her husband John in Chicago, IL, where son James Douglas and twin sons John Alphonso and William Francis were welcomed at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, while on recruiting duty. Her husband then attended Nuclear Submarine School in New London, CT. Then, they spent a year in Ballston Spa, NY, where John attended Advanced Nuclear Power Training School and they welcomed aboard daughter Catherine Blanche. They then transferred to Pascagoula, MS, for the construction and commissioning of the nuclear-powered submarine U.S.S. Sculpin SSN 590. During their two years in Pascagoula, their twin daughters Mary Josephine and Dorothy Lucille were born at Keesler Air Force Base Hospital in Biloxi, MS. They were then transferred to the submarine base in San Diego, CA for seven years, where they welcomed daughter Margaret Pearl. During this time John, now a commissioned officer, did two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Naval Advisor to the Vietnamese Navy. As a devoted Navy wife and mother, Catherine often raised her children alone, kept her home running smoothly, and helped other Navy wives whose husbands were overseas. When John returned from Vietnam in the fall of 1968 they joined the U.S. Ballistic Submarine Fleet, submarine squadron 14, USS Simon Lake AS-33 in Holy Loch, Scotland. Their third set of twins; daughters Ethel Marie Mike and Kelly Diane Sam were born in 1969 during their two years in Scotland. Catherine was happy to be an hour away from her home in Glasgow. Catherine and her family traveled extensively throughout Scotland and Ireland. She also enjoyed a vacation in Amsterdam with other Navy wives. When John returned to Vietnam in 1970, Catherine and her family transferred to Schilling Air Force Base "Home of the Waiting Wives" in Salina, KS. When he completed his two-year tour of duty in 1972, they went to Sturgeon Bay, WI, where John served with the supervisor of Naval Shipbuilding. Catherine was proud to see her son James "JD" sworn into the Navy by her husband. James became a Nuclear Submarine sailor like his father. John's last tour of Navy duty was Sturgeon Bay. John and Catherine retired there in June of 1975. After retirement, Catherine enjoyed traveling throughout Europe with her daughters. She especially loved returning home to Scotland. She was honored to meet Pope John Paul II several times in Rome. In December of 2005, Catherine and John celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Smith Glasgow, Scotland, her infant twin sons John and William, daughter Catherine, and her grandson Brian.
