Obituary of Louis Joseph Spano

A Requiem Mass for Mr. Louis Joseph Spano will be celebrated at 10am on
Thursday, May 3, 2012 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
Interment, with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be members of The Knights of Columbus, Council #3684. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, 6-8pm at GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC.

Mr. Spano, 91, of Aiken, died Monday April 30, 2012 at Aiken Regional
Medical Center after a brief illness.
A son of the late Domenick Spano and Frances Tomaino Spano, he was born in Manheim, WV and had lived in Keyser, WV before moving to Aiken in 1954
Lou served in the US Army during WWII fighting in and surviving the Battle of The Bulge and earning a Distinguished Unit Badge.
After leaving the service, Lou continued his education and then went to work at EI DuPont, eventually coming to the Savannah River Site in 1954 and retiring in 1982 as a senior superintendent in the Health Physics Department.
Lou was a Life Member of The American Legion Post #155, Western Port, MD, a member of VFW Post #6735, Mt. Storm, WV and a life member of the 78th Infantry Veterans Association. Lou was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and up until a few years ago, had served as an usher at the 5pm Mass that he attended for over fifty years. He was a Life Member and Past Grand Knight 1964-65 for Msgr. George Lewis Smith Council #3684 of the Knights of Columbus, Aiken. He volunteered for Aiken Habitat for Humanity and the Aiken Literacy Program.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Louis J. Spano, Jr., his wife, Angeline F. Spano and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, Robert Roseanna Spano, Aiken; a sister, Elaine Streets, Elk Garden, WV and three grandsons, John Meredith Spano, Easley, SC, Paul Spano and Christopher Spano, Aiken.
