Obituary of Charles Barry Wade

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Barry Wade, 76, of Aiken, departed this life on Thursday, October 17, 2013. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013 at GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER. Graveside services will be private. Born in Rock Hill, he was a son of the late Francis & Lottie Barry Wade. He was proceeded in death by a sister, Faye Frances Wade Boney in 1989, a sister-in-law, Paula Jean Swope in 1999 and a grandson, Cody Stephens in 2002. Mr. Wade attended several schools around South Carolina as his parents would move periodically to advance their careers in teaching, on the high school and in administrative levels. Barry, as he was affectionately called, attended Clemson College for a while then enlisted in the US Army. He thoroughly enjoyed being in Germany, where he was stationed near Stuttgart for three years. After his discharge, he worked construction to help build the Owens Corning Fiberglass Plant in Aiken, hiring on as a maintenance mechanic on June 22, 1960. In that capacity, he worked nearly eight years before hiring on with the newly constructed Kimberly-Clark Corporation plant in Beech Island, S.C. He retired from there February 28, 1994 with 26 years of service. Barry was a proud Endowment Member of the NRA. Not a traveler, his preference was to "putter around in the yard," pulling weeds, trimming the bushes, fertilizing, mowing and etc. A severe heart attack in early October 2007, and following health problems slowly took their toll in his remaining years and he was placed on Hospice Care September 2, 2012 for severe COPD and Emphysema. When he could no longer maintain the yard as it once was, Barry continued to enjoy watching the antics of the many species of birds who would come to the backyard feeders year-round, bringing their young to eat in early spring and summer. Often, one would hear him chastise our resident Mockingbird for chasing the Bluebird parents away. At other times he would say, "Now that wasn't very nice!" to the squabbling others. Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Janet Swope Wade of Aiken; two sons, John Barry Wade and Robert Swope Wade (Kathryn) of Aiken; a daughter, Marie Wade Stephens (Jimmy) of St. Joe Beach, Florida; four grandsons, Chris Wade (Casey) of Aiken, Thomas Gordy (Tonya) of Jackson, Seth Wade of Aiken and Josh Stephens of Jackson; two granddaughters, Leigh Gordy of Statesboro, GA and Lacy Stephens of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Betsey Wade Greene of Aiken and a brother-in-law, Charles Lee Swope of TDC-Aiken. A special thank you is extended to Shaunte', Renee', Brittany and the Southern Care hospice team members who came to help us and to Dr. Nicholas J. Sanito for his extraordinary care and concern over the years. Memorials may be sent to Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary, c/o Paul Koehler, Director, 4542 Silver Bluff Road, Jackson, SC, 29841.
