Funeral Services for Mr. Eugene Herman Byrum will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 2pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC with Rev. James A. Duncan officiating. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews and special friends; Mack Ross and Ben Wells and members of the Berea Pals & Baracha Sunday School class. Interment, with military honors will be at Southlawn Cemetery, Aiken. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be directed to Foreman Memorial Baptist Church Life Center Building Fund 207 Smith Ave. New Ellenton, SC 29809. Mr. Byrum, 81, of Aiken, died January 24, 2007 at his residence. A son of the late George Dewey and Pearl Blanton Byrum, he was born in Blacksburg, SC and had lived in Aiken since 1952. He had been a member of the security patrol for I.E. Dupont at the Savannah River Site before retiring in the early 1980's. He served his country in the United States Army, entering into service on June 3, 1943 at Ft. McClellan, AL. He served at Guadalcanal, Russell's and the Philippines. He was awarded a WW II Victory Medal, APT Service Medal and a Philippine Liberation Medal and was discharged in January of 1946. During his service career, he was the armed services welterweight boxing champion. Eugene was a member of Foreman Memorial Baptist Church in New Ellenton and was active in the Berea Pals and Baracha Sunday School class and was also a member of VFW Post 5877. Many years ago, he played for the SRS team in the fast-pitch, softball league. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by two brothers, Leonard and Paul Byrum. He is survived by his wife, Coleen Moss Byrum, Aiken; a son, Kenneth Carolyn Byrum, Gloverville; a step-son, Jerry Debra Ellis, North Augusta; a daughter, Donna Benny Jackson, Gloverville; a brother, Bill Rose Byrum, Oxford, GA and a sister, Ruth Moss, Lake City, SC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great, grandchildren.
