Memorial contributions may be directed to Aiken SPCA, 401 Wire Rd, Aiken, SC, 29801. Mr. Vandervelde, 81, of Aiken, died Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born in Chamberlain, SD, he was the son of the late Celim and Hilda Manback Vandervelde. He lived in Brookings, SD before moving to Aiken fifty seven years ago. He received his master's degree at South Dakota State University. Vance served his country in the Navy for three years. He was a retired physicist with DuPont at Savannah River Plant SRS. He enjoyed playing bridge, sailing, and coaching little league baseball. Vance is survived by his wife of sixty years, Isabel R. Vandervelde, children, Martin Vandervelde, Aiken; Steve Vandervelde, Columbia, SC; Rose Vandervelde Dickerson, Aiken; Paul Judy Burquest Vandervelde; Boise, ID; John Vandervelde, Greg Sandra Dickson Vandervelde; Columbia; sister, Alice Harrington, St. Paul, MN; brother, Tom Vandervelde, Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Jack Kirven, Sanna Kirven, Nathaniel Vandervelde, Anne Vandervelde, Frances Vandervelde, Ea Vandervelde, great grandchildren, Harrison Norman, and Bridget Shealey.
