Mr. Douglas, 97, of New Ellenton, SC, died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his residence..
A son of the late William Andrew Douglas and Frances Barfield Douglas, he was born September 16, 1915 in Lake City, SC. He served in the US Army during WW II. Mr. Douglas moved his family to New Ellenton, SC, in 1954.
Mr. Douglas was a dedicated Christian that firmly believed in giving to charities. He was a member of Foreman Memorial Baptist Church for 58 years in New Ellenton where he served on the Board of Deacons, the building committee, and served as the Men's Sunday School teacher. Mr. Douglas was a Christian example in all of his activities of life and was very much blessed by God. He was a retired welder of 60 years with the Local 150. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed sharing vivid stories of his past childhood, farm life, Army life and of his years in construction. His stories and jokes will be greatly missed by family and friends of all ages. In 1999, he was known as the oldest man to learn how to fly a plane. Age was no deterrent to his ambitions.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Douglas was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Mildred Fenters Douglas, three brothers, three sisters, four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
He is survived by his children Wayne Rita Douglas of Edgewater, FL., Sharon Rich of Evans, GA., Kay John McKinney of Jackson, SC., Susan Dwight Hall of New Ellenton, SC; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Hawthorne, Jeffrey Rich, Lt.
