Lost track of Bill for years but always knew that there'd be closure; he'd surface on SNL as a spokesman for Land Rover, or, sadly here, his obit. Met Bill in Pensacola; in VA Beach he saw me off to Viet Nam and we had a beach house on return, with 2 to 12 others on the weekends. Those times were a mix of Bill's intelligent insights, hilarious perspectives, and situations that regularly went absurd. I left for CA, Bill to Wharton; we connected again in the 80s; the rest is history I know little of. Except for the Land Rover in the back yard. We should someday share at a wake on 86th street - rally around his car - it's the one without the dashboard, or gas - to the Rolling Stones... jleonard67@gmail.com.
Farewell my friend, you've touched the lives and are forever in the memories of many.

I have to ditto Steve Fagan's comments regarding Bill Marxy and his knowledge of music. You haven't seen anything until you saw Bill with a broom stick in his hand doing his Mick Jaggar imitation singing Jumpin' Jack Flash at the Mustin Beach Officer's Club in Pensacola, FL in 1967. We met during a NROTC midshipmen cruise while in school I was at Marquette Univ and we both went through the training command together in 1967/68 - then went our separate ways. Lo and behold I was in Newport, RI a couple of years ago and ran into Bill late one evening. Only took about 5 minutes to catch up on 40 years and we even called Fagan to complete the cycle.
Bill was a good man and will be missed as he "goes West". Best, C.W.

Like other Navy people, I just found out about Bill's death. I had the pleasure of meeting Bill during flight school. We shared a house on Pensacola Beach in the fall of 1967. What a great guy! You'll see many references in these messages about his amazing recall of music. No one was even close to beating him at "Who sang....?" And, in front of a crowd, his lip sync routine of Mick Jagger was something to behold. But in addition to those great memories, I think of him as a good and caring person, and I am fortunate to have known him.

I was a roomate of Bill's in Virginia Beach, when he was in the Navy. Bill was one of the smartest people that I knew. This was in 1969 and 70. I remember when he went off to Wharton when he got out of the Navy then lost track of him. Boy those were the days. On a lark, I Googled his name tonight and unfortunately, found out he passed away. Rest In Peace my old Navy friend.

I was just emailed Bill's obit and was floored. Over the years I had lost touch with him. He was by best man at my wedding in 1972. I served aboard the U.S.S. Independence with him in 1969 in the Med. I roomed with him in Va. Beach after our sea tour in the Navy. Bill was one of those people who had a photographic memory, he saw it once and could remember it. As an example, I once visited him in Pa. while he went to school, we ended up at a night club where the DJ asked who sang a particular song and later the DJ gave the answer. I remember Bill going up to the DJ and arguing with him, the DJ pulled out a reference book and behold Bill was right. Bill could not only remember the song/artist/year, he could remember what label it was on. Bill will be forever be in my memory. He is now in God's hand now. To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.

To Bill's family,
My sincerest condolences. Bill was a wonderful man. Always kept the conversation lively and just plain made you think. I worked with Bill for quite a few years in Newport. He was one of those people you never forget about. Heaven now has a very witty angel!

I am so sorry for your loss. Bill and I were good friends from our Virginia Beach days, having met in the early 80's. He was great fun to be with and wow did we have some good times together. We had many discussions over the years about our favorite NBA players and NBA teams and music from the 60's and 70's, while consuming more than a few Lite Beers from Miller. Ironically, I called Bill the Saturday morning before he died. After talking and laughing about some of our past adventures together, my last words to him were "I love you like a brother, Bill" and his response was "You know I feel the same way." I will dearly miss Bill as he was a great and unique friend.

I was lucky to have lunch with Bill earlier this year on one of my visits to Aiken. We had a great visit and shared our fond memories of Aiken High; we had many good laughs especially when we talked about our times with Coach Bell and the basketball team. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

I met Bill at our local Brew Pub - he always had a smile and a quick wit. He also knew every single song ever written! I had so much fun playing musical trivia with him. He called me Jen-Jen, not a nickname I would let most call me, but he was such a good soul I didn't mind.
Sometimes we talked about health issues and living with our conditions, as I also deal with a life threatening illness. Bill was very supportive of me and even came out to Columbia last year with some friends to support a fundraiser for my disease, Cystic Fibrosis.
I wish I had more time to get to know him better. He will be missed.

I remember him as quite a character on his visits to the Halstead Home in West Hampton Long Island, NY in the 80's. He was also very particular about how the food was prepared making sure everything was perfect but he was more the Chef in Charge verses the Worker Bee. My thoughts and prays are for him and with his family.

Dear Brian, Marilyn and Chrissie, I am very sorry to hear this news. I do know the three of you and your parents and have always thought of you with the highest regard. In my mind the Marx family was one of the quintessential Aiken families. I didnot know Bill but he sounds like a very accomplished man. I hope that living in Aiken for the last year was a comfort for him and that he reconnected with old friends as well. I will be thinking of you all. Much love Carroll Flynn

Living in Florida as I do keeps me away from events in Aiken; were it not for all my friends there. I…we…have just lost one of those friends. I can still hear & see Bill’s voice and face in my mind. He will always be there. Thank you all for his memory.
