A memorial service for Francis Ottis "Pete" Garthoff will be held on Saturday, January 21st, at 11am, at Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove, VA. Mr. Garthoff, 87, of Aiken, SC, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born and raised in Williamsport, PA, Pete was the son of the late Audley Ottis Garthoff and Ursula Smith Garthoff. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Pete graduated from Penn State University in 1940 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked very hard to support his family, his wife, Janice G. Lantz, two sons, James O. and F. Joseph Garthoff, and his daughter, Gretchen Marie Bradford. He served in the Army becoming a captain in Guam, joined the Corps of Engineers at West Point, and worked on heavy and highway construction projects, including major mid-Atlantic interstates, airports, dams, and other flood control projects, until he retired in 1983. After the loss of his first wife, Pete married Thelma Strub Garthoff in 1984 on New Year's Day. Together with Thelma, he spent many happy years living in Lake of the Woods, VA, Solomons, MD, and Aiken, SC. He was an avid sports fan, especially Penn State football and the Washington Redskins, card player, namely bridge and cribbage, talented pianist, and the perfect companion for engaging in conversation. He is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Thelma Strub Garthoff, son, James Garthoff, Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Meghan David Bartholomew, Karen Vincent Crossan, and Scott Bradford; and great-grandchildren Conall Crossan, Samuel Bartholomew, Malachy Crossan, and Adam Bartholomew. The family has requested that memorials be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871-1950, www.ahaf.org.
