Mr. B. Ralph Dion of Aiken died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, SC. He was 92 years old. A Requiem Mass for Mr. Dion will be concelebrated by Rev. Gregory B. Wilson and Rev. Edward Fitzgerald at 11:30 AM on Friday, April 13, 2012, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be directed to the Wounded Warriors Project, 1190 Interstate Pkwy, Augusta, GA 30909.
A son of the late Raphael Dion and Bertha Gemme Dion, he was born in Taftville, CT, raised in Providence, RI, and moved to Aiken, SC, in 1955. Ralph served his country in the US Army for 26 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves. He worked for over 30 years as a cost accountant for EI DuPont at The Savannah River Plant, retiring in the mid-1980's. After retiring from DuPont, Ralph began volunteering to help bereaved families file insurance claims for their loved ones. His dedication was appreciated by many widows who benefited from his hard work.
Ralph was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Msgr. George Lewis Smith Council #3684 and served as a Past Faithful Navigator. He also served as a Past State Treasurer for the DeSoto Province, South Carolina. In addition, Ralph was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Ft. Gordon, GA.
Ralph was predeceased by his wife Ruth Dion, his parents, and two brothers, Ambrose Dion and Laurent Dion. He is survived by a son, Tom Lisa Dion, Bristol, RI; three daughters, Deborah Michael Pawley, Aiken, Susan Stephen Yentsch, Lilburn, GA, and Teresa Moore, Blythewood, SC; and four sisters, Olive McDermott, Lynn McCafferty, Trudy Dion, and Esther Dion. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great-grandsons.
