My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Karel Whyte, a genealogy friend of many years. We worked together in researching the Swearingen family. I helped Karel with census research at the National Archives branch where I volunteer, and she helped me with her vast store of knowledge on the early Swearingens. I\'ll miss our correspondence and sharing.

To the family of Karel Whyte. I met Karel in 2003 at Shag Lessons and then she started coming to our Singles Bible Study at Millbrook Baptist Church. I am also a widow and Karel and I shared a lot. We would go out to dinner and also enjoyed going dancing some. Karel was a wonderful person and will be missed greatly. Karel, whom I fondly called "BB" for Biker Babe, was one in a million ... a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
I met her only once, in the summer of 1999, when she and Jim came to Long Island on one of their many cross-
country trips on Jim\'s beloved Harley.
It was her never-ending search for information about the far-flung Swearingen family, of which Jim was a member, that first brought us together and we became, across the years, closer than many brothers and sisters.
I shall miss her terribly, and my heart goes out to her family.

Karel was so special to me and I felt like I was just getting to know her well when she was taken from me. If it weren\'t for Karel my Dad your uncle Charles and I would have never reconnected to your grandmother my aunt Mary Helen. Karel was such a kind and giving person. I was hoping to get much closer to her in the years ahead. I remember the first time we met your Mom and Dad. They were in Denver for a business trip and Jim had ridden out on his Harley with Karel. My husband and I had driven from Boulder down to Denver to meet them. They were both so much fun and I was amazed at how much Jim looked like my Dad. I got to see them together one other time when Dad and I drove up from Florida to visit your grandmother but that was the last time I saw your Dad. I didn\'t get to know your Dad very well but I did have the pleasure of visiting with your mother a few more times when I came to Aiken. I will miss her very much!! I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet and get to know both of you, it was something your Mom had wanted and the timing just hadn\'t been right for us to meet. I understand how you are feeling and there is nothing that I can say beyond, "I am so very sorry for your loss" that will help. But you can take solace in knowing that I know very intimately what you are going through. I lost my Mom in 1996 and Dad passed in 2002, so the grief is still with me. If I can help in any way please don\'t hestitate to contact me. I\'ve left my information for Katie on her home phone but I will repeat it here for Jimmy as well. Shirley A. Hopkins, 6220 Diamondback Drive, Salisbury, MD 21801. Phone: 410-341-0404. I wanted to be with you but it isn\'t possible . You will have my thoughs and prayers during this difficult time in your lives. Please contact me when you can! My love-your cousin Shirley.

We loved Karel and will miss her greatly. Her open smile, giving heart, personal strength and sense of delight in Jim, Jimmy, Katie were unwavering, as was her obvious love of Maria and the boys. She had such joy and energy! I\'ll never see a Harley that I don\'t think of Karel and Jim. I wish there was a way that I could be there with you. Please know that you have been, and will stay, in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Jennie

Please accept my deepest condolences regarding the untimely passing of Karel. My father, Jim Swearingen, was friends with her and spoke very highly of her personally and also of her invaluable research of the Swearingen family history. A few years ago for Christmas, my brother, sister and I received an inscribed copy of Karel\'s genealogical record of the Swearingen family tree--most impressive. This is such sad news--I\'m so sorry.
