Evan Kane posted a condolence
Monday, June 20, 2005
Dear Kaplan family,
I wish I could say something to help the immeasurable pain you must be going through. All I can think to do is say what I will always remember of David.
The David I remember was extremely humble despite having accomplished so much. He was always excited or looking forward to something, be it some compound or chemical he figured out how to make in chemsitry lab, or, more recently, his motorcycle. Whenever we talked, my respect for my friend grew, either because he taught me something new, or because I learned something new about him.
I spent last semester at Mississippi State instead of USC, and I chatted with him online every now and then. I was looking forward to my Co-op in Greenville so I could meet up with him.
David enriched many lives. I will miss the good times and laughter of the good ole days, and the world will grieve the loss of a great heart and mind.
If there is anything I can do for any of you, please ask.
Sincerely,
Evan Kane

David Kaplan was a very unique individual, and, at the risk of sounding clichéd, a good friend, even though we didn\'t see much of each other since going to college. His dry, at times dark sense of humor and his personal philosophy of life hinted at a depth of emotion I think few people ever dare to attempt to reach. I have many fond memories of being with David in high school and the various pranks and stunts we would pull. It\'s sad to see him go, but he will definitely--again, at the risk of sounding like a prepackaged sentiment--live on in my memories. David Kaplan lived with the best of them, and I will always remember his intelligence, his bravado, and his personality. I regret that I will be unable to attend the ceremonies, as I will be abroad, but my thoughts will be on David, and my prayers with the family.

The Smith Family posted a condolence
Wednesday, June 15, 2005
Steven Smith is attending Clemson and today he learned through the Clemson announcements that Clemson lost a student, David. He called us. Through the years we have watched your children mature into adults. We were all extremely saddened by this news. We pray that your fondest memories of David will quickly fill your broken hearts. We hope you will find strength to cope with your loss amongst your family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, and even the people in Aiken who have known you but have grown distant, like us since our paths no longer cross as often as they once did while raising our families. We just wanted you to know that we do care how your family is coping and will pray for you.
Frank, Pat, Steven and Caroline Smith
