Aiken, SC-Funeral services for Robert Thomas Whitehead, Jr., MD, will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 2 PM at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, Graniteville, SC, with Reverend Douglas Puckett officiating. Pallbearers will be the Honorable Peter R. Nuessle, Harry Wyman Dicks, Dr. Don Pennington, Dr. James Hagan, John Cunningham, and William G. Smith. Interment will follow in Graniteville Cemetery, Graniteville, SC. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 16, 2003 from 6 until 8 PM at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC.
Dr. Whitehead, 73, of Aiken, SC, husband of Mrs. Alice Baker Whitehead, died Monday, December 15, 2003 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA.
A native of Lake City SC, the only son of the late Robert Thomas Whitehead, Sr. and the late Bessie Maria Howle Whitehead, Dr. Whitehead proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force where he was a Fighter Pilot.
Dr. Whitehead was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina and did residencies at both the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center and the Medical College of GA.
Dr. Whitehead practices medicine for forty-three years first in Lake City, SC and in Graniteville, SC, where he retired in 2002. He was a member of the Aiken County Medical Association, the South Carolina Medical Associations, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians, the American Legion, and the South Carolina Medical PAAC Board, was a former FAA Medical Examiner, and had formerly been active in the Civil Air Patrol.
An active member of St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, Graniteville, SC, he was a Jr. Warden, Sr. Warden, and a Chalice Bearer.
In addition to his wife, Alice Baker Whitehead, a son, Robert Thomas Whitehead, III, MD, Joni Pawley?s Island, SC; daughters, Elizabeth Howle Whitehead and Rebecca Thomas Whitehead, both of Columbia, SC; and grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Whitehead and Cameron Jean Whitehead, Pawley?s Island, SC, survive.
The family has asked that memorials in memory of Dr. Whitehead be made to St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 276, Graniteville, SC 29829.
