Memorial services for Edwin D. Bransome, Jr., M.D., 79, of Aiken, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA or to the Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue, Miami, FL, 33136.
Dr. Bransome was born in New York City, a son of the late Edwin & Margaretta Homans Bransome. He graduated from St. Paul School in Concord, NH then from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. Attained Medical Degree from Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons. Completed Internship in Internal Medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bransome then completed Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, completed Fellowships in Endocrinology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Biochemistry and Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Bransome was a professor of medicine at Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation in LaJolla, California, MIT in Cambridge, Mass., and the Section Chief of the Endocrinology Department at The Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Bransome was also Professor Emeritus, trustee and president of the US Pharmacopoeia.
Dr. Bransome was a member of Palmetto Golf Club, Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda and the Green Boundary Club in Aiken.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Janet Williams Bransome of Aiken; a son, Edwin D. Bransome, III, of Hilton Head; a daughter, April Grace Bransome-Gorton and her husband, Ronald A. Gorton, III, of Laurel Fork, VA and two grandchildren, Grace Jessica Gorton and Grayson Edwin Gorton of Laurel Fork, VA.
