Funeral services for Mr. William D. Haggard, III will be held on Friday January 9, 2004 at 10am at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. Interment will take place Monday, January 12, 2004 at 11am at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, TN. George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC is assisting the family. Mr. Haggard, 76, of Aiken, died Monday January 5, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Nashville, TN and had lived in Far Hills, NJ before moving to Aiken in the late 1960?s. Mr. Haggard, a graduate of the University of the South, was an outstanding horseman, who won innumerable prizes in a long career in horse shows, steeple chasing, three-day eventing and stadium jumping. A member of the United States Equestrian Team for twenty years, he rode Bold Minstrel in the three day event on the teams which won the team silver medal in the Pan-American Games in 1959 and the team gold medal in 1963. He fox hunted with the Hillsboro Hounds in Tennessee, the Essex in New Jersey and the Aiken Drag in South Carolina. He was also a devoted court tennis player and had collected a significant library of books about court tennis and equestrian sports. He was a former member of the Racquet & Tennis Club and the Book Club in New York; and the Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville. He is survived by his wife, Janet Kitzler Haggard, Aiken, two sons; William D. Haggard, IV, Nashville, TN and Edward Potter Haggard, Nashville, TN, a brother; John Holeman Haggard, Nashville, TN, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
