Elfrieda (Frieda) Mary Raisch Wheeland, 83, entered into rest on Monday, January 26, 2015. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 Am Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. Frieda was born to Charles and Emma Kohn Raisch and grew up in Williamsport, PA. She married Calvin Cleon Wheeland, her husband of 60 years, and together they raised five children. In 1971 the Wheeland family moved to Aiken, SC, and made it their home. Frieda was a lifelong homemaker who loved to cook, bake and sew for her family and friends. She was a animal lover, especially dogs, who she treated like her "kids". Over the years, Frieda opened her home and heart to children of working mothers, providing a loving environment for many. She spent several years caring for elderly neighbors and friends who were housebound. During the late 1970's and early 1980's, Frieda volunteered with the South Carolina Democratic Party working at voting locations and assisting in fundraising activities. Throughout her life, Frieda have a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid reader and loved nature. Love for these simple pleasures are gifts that Frieda engendered in her children and grandchildren. Frieda is survived by her brother, Clare Joseph Raisch; her five children: Mark E. Wheeland, Karen L. Poore, Craig M. Wheeland, Shawn M. Wheeland, and Regina A. Wheeland; eight grandchildren, Whitney Newton, Adam Poore, Traci and Hannah Wheeland, Emily Wheeland, Keagan Brander, Lucy and Ryan Minicozzi-Wheeland; and one great-grandchild, Sophie Newton. Frieda was preceded in death by her husband in July 2009. The family extends special thanks to the owners and staff at We Care Residential Incorporated and to Pruitt Health Hospice for the loving care they provided Frieda in her final years.
