Jim was a man who saw the best in other people. He was always kind to me. One of the best times I had with him was the day we spent driving through the small villages in Southern Italy, and walked throught the Trulis.

" Foxhole " Jim, My dear Friend:
It is difficult to comprehend that you have departed on your last mission. For 6-1/2 years, you have been a mainstay in my life and you and Jeri have become our dearest friends. We have laughed long and hard together and I will always treasure our hundred and hundreds of special moments of fun and adventure. You were a treasure... a very special man who comes around infrequently ... a one of a kind who touched many people with your humor and kindness. That "touching " is what life is all about in my opinion and I will always treasure how you touched we Ritters even our grand-dog TAHOE and added greatly to the quality and richness of our lives.
Thank you for being our dear, dear friend. We will remember you with great fondness and with deepest respects always.

Jeri & Family,
I became acquainted with "Foxhole" through my college and USAF mate, Bob Ritter, who lived across the street from Jeri & Jim. Foxhole and I met last summer.
Jim's personality and laugh were infectuous and 'captured' me instantly. Bob Ritter and I were combat veterans in Vietnam...Jim was a hero in the 'real war'- Battle of the Bulge and other WWII campaigns.
Jim was one of "The Generation" who Tom Brokaw wrote about in his book...fine of character, a giver, a winner, a doer, loved his family and always wanted "to know about you?"
We'll miss Jim on this Earth and Jeri'll have some tough days ahead. But, I'm secure knowing that Jim again 'protects us' from Heaven.
With prayers for the Burkett and extended families,
I am A Brother in Arms,
Bill Sutton

JERI AND FAMILY,
YOU ALL ARE IN OUR PRAYERS. JIM WAS A VERY SPECIAL COUSIN AND I HAVE NOTHING BUT FOND MEMORIES ESPECIALLY WHEN HE VISITED US HERE IN WASHINGTON WITH AUNT BEA AND UNCLE WALT. OUR FUN CONSISTED OF LAUGHTER, JOKES, HAVING MEALS TOGETHER AND OF COURSE DRINKING BEER. I KNOW HE WAS A WONDERFUL HUSBAND, FATHER, AND GRANDFATHER.
HE WAS EXTRA SPECIAL TO ME AND AS WE GREW OLDER AND OUR RESPONSIBILITIES INCREASED WITH OUR GROWING FAMILIES, WE, AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER MANAGED TO SHARE STORIES OF OUR FAMILIES. HE LOVED YOU ALL SO DEARLY.
I SEND MY LOVE TO ALL OF YOU...AS YOU ARE THE GEMS IN HIS CROWN.
GOD'S LOVE BE WITH YOU DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.
WE WILL SEND A DONATION IN HIS HONOR TO THE WASHINGTON CATHOLIC SCHOOLS ENDOWMENT HERE IN WASHINGTON. WC SCHOOLS ARE VERY UNIQUE FOR A TOWN THIS SIZE. WE HAVE PRE-SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL AND THE ENDOWMENT IS PART OF HELPING THE SYSTEM TO SURVIVE.
WE LOVE YOU.
CAROL AND JIM
