Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betty A. Pearce entered into eternal rest Monday, August 22, 2011. She was born February 26, 1921 in Morgantown, WV to Ernest Lee and G. ReLura Anthony. Her parents instilled in her an appreciation for travel and other cultures at the tender age of three. In 1924, the family boarded a steamer to Copenhagen, Denmark where her father studied for his masters degree. Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed traveling to many different places including Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, France, Alsace, Russia, the Caribbean, England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as welcoming travelers from such far off places as India, China, Australia, Japan, Africa, Brazil, and Argentina. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, from Michigan State University in 1942.
She lived in North Augusta, SC for over five decades and was a faithful member of Fairview Presbyterian Church. She volunteered many hours to her community and her church activities, where she could be counted on for excellent flower arrangements for the sanctuary, holiday celebrations, or weddings. She was an avid supporter of the Aiken's Makin' festival, where she sold flower arrangements, holiday items, and decorated gourds. She was an active member of the North Augusta Garden Club for several years.
Betty volunteered countless hours to adult literacy projects and was the first adult education tutor to be certified in Aiken County. Her efforts were recognized at the state and local level. In 1989, the Rotary Club of North Augusta recognized her with a Community Service Award.
She is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law: John A. Pearce, Ph.D. Ann; Robert E. Pearce, M.D. Jane; and Aiken City Manager Richard L. Pearce, J.D. Cindy; and two granddaughters: Logan A. Pearce of Austin, TX and Melissa L. Pearce of Columbia, SC.
